Vampires, human people, love, hate. What more do you need?

I've not yet read a lot of books about vampires, but this was different than all the others I've read. It takes place in a world that I almost can not imagine. A world where vampires and "human" people integrate. I must say, it did not feel strange. I could live in that world. The love is awesome and the tension is quite palpable. You're going to love the protagonists.The writers individually are very good writers but together they are great. I hope they are going to write a lot together. I recommend this book highly. You'll be captivated from the beginning to the end.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Courtney & Lare are great characters. They jump to life right from the start. The story was compelling, keeping me entangled all the way through. Lots of drama, laughter, tension and just plain fun. Another great story from two very enjoyable authors.

Funny, complex, and romantic

This is, hands down, one of the best romances I've ever read. The supernatural element is handled really well. It's set in a world where vampires are "out" - they live openly in society with humans, but this is a new development and there's a lot of hatred and prejudice toward them. This was a fresh take in my experience on the vampire angle, because normally the human characters have to come to terms with the fact that vampires exist, and that's always a huge shock. In this story, that revelation had already happened, and it allowed the focus to be on Courtney and Lare's developing relationship and their navigation through the hatred vampires are subject to.

I was really impressed with how complex all of the characters were, even the antagonists. I was particularly impressed with how complexly Mia, Courtney's girlfriend, was written. While the romance takes center stage (and is absolutely delicious) there are other plots winding through, and I enjoyed the little tidbits of foreshadowing that were sprinkled throughout. The writing is continuously gorgeous, as I would expect from these authors, and it shines even more when they write together. I wasn't left feeling like anything was unfinished. I would recommend this book to anyone, including those who aren't familiar with vampires. It created its own mythology and I really loved that.

Great book!

Every Christian should read this book to reawaken their understanding of Satan and how he works. He is as alive today as he was in the garden of Eden. The problem is that he has lulled the Church into a stupor which has allowed him to wreak havoc on the planet. It is past time that the Church awakens and prepares it's member to do battle and overcome the evil one.

Good study on evil

I am just discovering E M Bounds and while some of the words and phrases he uses are a bit dated his message is firm and clear. Reading SATAN I was struck on easily evil works through this world. This is a good book for those who are on the fence spiritually and turned off by the mega churches and spiritual salesmen.

I don't think it would be a good read for new believers

I will finish reading it, but it seems to give satan too much glory at the beginning. Waits too long (& I'm still waiting) to see where the author gives God the glory for overcoming satan through Jesus Christ by Jesus' life, death, burial, resurrection and the power of Jesus' blood; and that God always causes us to triumph (2 Cor 2:14), even when satan tries to hinder us from getting to where God desires for us to be, doing what God would have us to do, having what God would have us to have so that we believers can be a blessing in & to this world. satan is a nuisance, & an enemy, but God has our (believers') backs. I'm reading on to see if the author ever gets to those scriptures. So far it hasn't mentioned how Jesus stripped satan of his power & that the only power satan has is through deceiving us into believing that his way (rebellion, etc) is the way to go. It reminds me of something I read about "How can you tell if a dollar bill is a counterfeit. By studying the authentic." We learn from the Word of God (the Holy Bible) that the true God reveals Himself in His Word. I don't think it would be a good read for new believers, unless they know that "For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love & a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

If you're a parent or student who is worried about paying for college, I feel your pain right now. I, too, have college on the brain - mainly because my oldest daughter is a senior in high school and she's presently filling out college applications.
She's a terrific student and is even vying to be a 2015 National Merit Scholarship winner. But it definitely hasn't escaped my husband and I that each of the schools on her list of college prospects has a sticker price between $55,000 and $65,000 per year.
  With a son who is currently a freshman in high school, and another younger daughter now in third grade, I know we'll need help in tackling total college expenses for three kids. I also want our family to be smart about paying for college - and to avoid student loans if at all possible.
That's why I've been boning up on the fiscal aspects of lowering college costs. And I'm confident that what I've learned will not only help my family - but yours as well.

Peter Ruehl was born in New York City in 1947. He first came to Australia to cover the America's cup in Fremantle in 1987, but quickly discovered a broader role writing humorous columns about Australian life, his sense of the absurd compounded by having an Australian wife and three children. Along the way, he transformed himself into one of Australia's most beloved writers, always working from his home near the beach to create a world rich in imagery and laughter.

I used to read his column in the Australian Financial Review regularly, often laughing out loud in the train (and getting weird look from my fellow passengers). A Funny View of the Place Downunder

Peter was a childhood friend of mine so I well know his sense of humor. He is said to write in the genre of P. J. O'Rourke. I think he writes as well like Dave Barry. Peter left us in 2011. He and his family lived in Australia. And though I am not familiar with some of the names he wrote about, I can still appreciate how observant he was of the foibles of the world and life all around him.

Comedy Gold - but audience specific

This book is hilarious. Ruehl's death is very unfortunate since his writing was so good. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, because I think some of the pieces require the reader to be a certain age (over about 40) or have some knowledge of Australian politics.

I am originally from Spain and I have a 2 year old. My son loves books and I always try to find new books in spanish. It is indeed difficult to find books in spanish from Spain, which is my mother tongue.
It is a nice story about a dragon that can't blow fire.Perfect for a 2 year old. I highly recommend the book.

Good documentary, poor gallery

Guptill wrote this book about America's favorite illustrator at the height of his career, back in 1946. His career had another twenty years to go at that point, including at least 70 more of his famous Post covers. This book is a snapshot and retrospective of his work up to that time.

You won't find the usual biographic data here: parents, childhood, and the rest. Instead, this praises the illustrator who had captured the country fondness and respect by capturing its image - the image that America wanted to have of itself. Small wonder the country wanted to know more about the man who knew so much about them, or at least about their hopes and dreams.

Rockwell adopted a chatty, conversational tone with the author. He described every aspect of his working process, including the professional, conceptual, and painstaking technical steps he went through. The book is profusely illustrated with his preliminary sketches and drawings, as well as some photos of biographical interest. A few paintings appear in color, but the large majority are black and white, often of indeterminate contrast or focus. Remember the purpose of this book, though. This isn't a gallery of his work; instead, the reproductions serve to illustrate his career. Most appear in only enough detail to remind the familiar reader about the general structure of any given piece.

Decide what you want - a collection of Rockwell's idealized images, or a look at the man himself. If you want just the pictures, this might disappoint you. If you want an introduction to Rockwell as person and artist, you'll find a lot to like.

Don Lago has been a political activist, book reviewer, kayaking instructor, researcher, and author. When Don Lago went looking for his Swedish roots, it was originally to capture memories that would be lost as Alzheimer's disease ravaged his father's mind. Lago's search began with a recreation of a trip his father had taken years before to Granna, Sweden, the Lago ancestral hometown. That journey convinced Lago that his Swedish roots should matter to him, although he "wasn't sure exactly what they should mean." To find out, he initiated annual trips to Scandinavia and soon extended his study to American Scandinavia: "After I had stayed in Lund, Sweden, I was curious to see Lund, Wisconsin." A former political activist, book reviewer, and kayaking instructor, Lago lives in Arizona, but one could assume from this work that he is rarely home. The account of his peregrinations is the beautiful and thoughtful On the Viking Trail. So much more than a personal account or family tribute, Viking Trail tells of the hardships of immigration, the importance of community, and the roots of American attitudes toward the land.

In keeping with his Scandinavian sense of modesty, Lago is surpassingly humble about the book he has written here. On a postcard from a Motel 6 somewhere in Iowa, he wrote me that Viking Trail would be of interest only to those of Scandinavian heritage. Once begun, however, there is no turning back from this travel into Scandinavian America via Lago's volume, there's no putting it down, and there's no forgetting the courage and creativity of these immigrant people and their unique contribution to America. In Viking Trail, not only has Lago found the meaning of his-and his father's-Swedish roots, he's led us to discover our own.

Sip a Cup of Gevalia with Don Lago

When I noticed that this book is published by the University of Iowa Press, I was a little apprehensive. Would it be dry and academic? No. The book is a good read, warm, entertaining, charming and witty.

The author's purpose was to retrace his Swedish roots, but beyond that to understand the experience of Scandinavians in America. So, while the book has a strong Swedish motif, he includes Danes, Norwegians and Finns--although he found that the latter consider themselves to be non-Scandinavians.

He uses his imagination and humor to develop themes supplying context and meaning to his searches. The humor is often at the author's expense as real life tramples over his literary constructs. Along the way the reader is enchanted by the many stories of people and places that Lago scatters throughout this fine book. In a gentle and always fascinating style he illustrates the many contributions that Scandinavian immigrants have made to American life. He is a good writer and readers will enjoy his clear, supply prose.

Something that I really like about the book is that although his travels and tales are lighthearted, the author develops some deep and penetrating insights about what it means to be an American, what America is and what it means to the world. In these meditations, Lago gives us his own thoughts, not citations and footnotes. In Swedish style, this is done modestly and in a quiet voice. It is clear that he would like nothing more than to share a good discussion about his themes and conclusions with his readers, who will feel that they are holding a conversation with Don Lago, hopefully over a steaming cup of Gevalia coffee.

"Must read" for all Scandinavian Americans

I'm only half way through but I must stop to urge Scandinavian Americans everywhere to read and reread this wise, wonderful and informative exploration of what it means to be a Scandinavian American. Belongs in the library of everyone with a drop of Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian or Swedish blood, or mixture thereof.

The book describes how a Jewish kid from Brighton Beach, New York, followed his dream to become the head track and field coach at Auburn University for twenty-eight years. Rosen coached seven Olympians and 143 All-Americans and guided Auburn’s track and field team to four consecutive SEC Conference indoor championships. Rosen was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, the U.S. Track and Field Hall of Fame, and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, and Auburn University named its new track the Hutsell-Rosen Track.

This book follows Mel Rosen's life from the streets of Brooklyn during the 1930s and 1940s to his selection as head coach of the United States track-and-field team for the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. The story describes how a Jewish kid from Brighton Beach, New York, followed his dream to become the head track-and-field coach at Auburn University for 28 years. Rosen's achievements there were extraordinary. He coached seven Olympians and 143 All-Americans and guided Auburn's track-and-field team to four consecutive Southeastern Conference indoor championships. The pinnacle of his career was coaching U.S. Olympians to a record 20 medals in Barcelona. As a result of his impressive achievements, Rosen was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame (1993), the U.S. Track and Field Hall of Fame (1995), and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame (1994). Auburn University honored him in 2006 by naming its new track the Hutsell-Rosen Track.

Author Craig Darch interviewed many of Rosen's former athletes and fellow coaches. Included are comments from football/baseball superstar Bo Jackson, legendary football coach Pat Dye, and Olympic medalists Harvey Glance, Willie Smith, and Carl Lewis. Most importantly, the book relies on the memories of Mel Rosen, his family, his Brighton Beach "buddies," and other friends he made along the way. It details Rosen's coaching career during the turbulent 1950s and 1960s. Included are lively vignettes about Auburn sports history, Alabama history, Jews in the South, and the Olympics. The story is an intimate, anecdote-rich portrait of a man who achieved excellence both as a track coach and as a person.

About the Author
Craig Darch is the Humana-Sherman-Germany Distinguished Professor of Special Education at Auburn University. He earned his doctorate at the University of Oregon and has taught at Auburn for 32 years. While this is his first biography, he has coauthored three college-level textbooks on learning and intellectual disabilities and has published more than 60 research articles for professional journals in the fields of special education and psychology. He has contributed chapters to three edited books and has written articles on special education for three encyclopedias.

Harvey Glance is an Olympic gold-medal athlete who was trained by Coach Mel Rosen.

A very interesting well written book. The author allowed the reader to understand and care about the Mel Rosen without being bored by unnecessary detail, yet enough details to fully comprehend the man and his career.
