I really want to like this book [re-edited]

As a savvy Ruby developer i know very well what sir Thomas did for the community.
Now Dave is focusing on the Elixir language, and this will shot some light on it: many Ruby folks (me included) will quickly grab his book to enjoy functional programming.
When i started with Ruby there were few books around, so i pick-axed Dave one: i enjoyed it for the first few chapters, then started feeling the pain of academic examples and verbose writing. More recently i jumped to Elixir and get attracted by Dave's book slim format.
From chapters 5 i started being in the same pick-axe mood: is fine to figure out how to implement the map function, but i have hard time figuring out the utility. Even worst uncle Dave forgets he never mentioned some features he innocently puts in the examples: you can check online documentation, but i grab the book to get some extra sugar, not struggling with it.
Do not get me wrong, this is not a bad book, i just really want to like it more... but i don't.

I gave Dave's book another chance after completing the online docs: i must admit i start enjoying it (one more star).
All of the effort here is oriented in letting you leave object-oriented safe-ground and start exploring functional programming style: in this respect some lack of details are forgivable, and code kata serve the scope well.

Five months passed since i read Dave's book. My knowledge on the topic has increased, along with my passion for the language.
I slurped the MEAP version of Elixir in Action (a great book). This also reveals that "Programming Elixir" falls short in the OTP ground: i had hard times understanding the Erlang (and Elixir) philosophy. No surprise here, since Dave is not a seasoned Erlang developer. I think this book is good as a primer read (as the online docs are), but lacks the details that force you to keep a copy along (as i do for Elixir in Action and Metaprogramming Elixir).
Said that: thanks to Dave for supporting Elixir, hope more advanced material will come from PP.

Focusses on the how and the why, not the syntax. Issues understanding functional programming? This is the book you need...

As someone who really see the need for being able to code on the Erlang virtual machine I had tried and failed to get proficiency in Erlang. Along comes Elixir with promises of a shallower learning-curve and that prompted me to watch Dave's keynote at the first Erlang Conference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hDVftaPQwY

His infectious enthusiasm and ability to translate the difficult concept during that talk were enough motivation for me to buy the book.

I have not been disappointed.

Learning YetAnotherImperativeLanguage or YetAnotherOOLanguage is easy, it's just syntax. The challenges I was having were entirely based on how to think. The subtitle of his talk and the very strong theme throughout this book is **how** and **why** to think Different(ly) when it comes to functional programming.

This is the key to the success I'm getting with this book over and above the others in that its focus in on the how and why, and not the syntax. Best book of the year thus far for me.

Lightning strikes twice. Dave Thomas once introduced us to Ruby with the Programming Ruby book. Now he's found a new programming language that fits the current computing landscape of today as well as Ruby did then. Dave's enthusiasm and humor come through and add to the fun of learning Elixir. It's a great language and this book is a great introduction to it. I recommend the book to all programmers. Even if you never find yourself using Elixir professionally, the concepts -- especially pattern matching and process concurrency, will broaden your sense of possibilities.

David Annandale is the author of The Horus Heresy novel The Damnation of Pythos. This is a collection of three stories, each featuring a company of a different Space Marines First Foundation Chapter. They act in concert to draw in and destroy a powerful Ork warlord known as the Overfiend, and who has taken control of the Octarius system and a number of others. By order of appearance, the three Chapters are the White Scars, the Raven Guard and the Salamanders.

Each story focuses on a key Space Marine character who is the epitome of his Chapter. For the White Scars, it is a Psyker. For the Raven Guard, it is the Shadow Captain, which is the title of the story and a rather clear hint to his abilities - and for the Salamanders, it is the Company’s Techmarine, hence the story’s title (Forge Master).

A particular nice touch is the appearance of Eldars, “allied” to the Space Marines because they share a common goal in destroying the Ork threat. This threat happens to be much greater than the Space Marines happen to know and, of course, the Eldars are not even likely to tell them the whole truth. The level of distrust between the very circumstantial allies is at its highest, leaving them just about capable of coordinating their struggle against the Ork forces, but no more than that.

An additional and interesting feature is the way in which the author has, with his three stories, combined several types of warfare including space battles, ambushes and assaults on Ork bases. Also valuable are the comparisons that these three stories allow for between the fighting techniques of the ultra-strong and brutish Orks, the lethal, elegant and skilful Eldars, and the Space Marines.

I will mention no more than that, to avoid spoilers, although I will add that I was quite pleased by these stories, and even somewhat agreeably surprised. Four strong stars.

If you like Space Marines slaughtering Orks over and over with minimal ...

Huge 40K fan, have read Mr. Annandale before but I just didn't "feel" this one. It may have been that it was written as 3 short stories, and yes I was aware of that before I bought it, but personally didn't feel they connected in a way that flowed well. If you like Space Marines slaughtering Orks over and over with minimal effort then this book may be for you. If you were hoping for any kind of light being shed on The Overfiend or the particulars of the Chapters involved in the book then please move along, there is not much to see here.

3 Legions for the price of 1

It wasn't too bad of a book, 3 stories strung together, but it's more or less the same character of each legion you would find from each chapter, stereotypical, Raven Guard sneak and provide ambush attacks, Salamanders are humble, helpful, very well mannered, say thank you at the end of every sentence and the White Scars are in it for the speed. I think the orcs could have been developed more, I really liked the concept of a few of them, including the shaman and engineer. Some of the in legion conflicts weren't too bad either. Hhhmmmnn, the locomotive was awesome...okay, I'll change it from 3 to 4 stars.

Why are you writing the book now?

I have been asked for the last 15 years to write a book, and it is only now that I feel the time is right. My confidence in myself was restored after two successful exhibitions of my photography, and it occurred to me that I was finally ready to take a look at the unique experiences of my life and to share them--including all the ups and downs.

Tell us about the first time you met George Harrison.

Working as a model, I occasionally went for castings, mainly for television commercials. I went for an interview with one of the directors I had worked with in the past, and he cast me in his first movie, A Hard Day’s Night, to play the part of a schoolgirl. When I first saw George on the set, I thought he was the best-looking man I’d ever seen. I was so surprised when he asked me out on a date at the end of my first day of filming.

Tell us about the first time you heard George Harrison's song, "Something."

George said he had written a song for me, and he played it on the guitar at home without the words. Then when I heard the song after it had been recorded I couldn’t believe how utterly beautiful it was. It was released on a single in October 1969, and I felt so thrilled and flattered.

Tell us about the first time you heard Eric Clapton's "Layla."

Eric invited me to his band's flat one day and played a rough recording of "Layla" on a cassette recorder. I was sitting on a sofa and he on the floor as it played, and he kept looking up at me for a reaction. I was stunned; the intensity, passion and tenderness came across so strongly--I knew, as he said, it was written for me.

An insight into the world of those who've never had to work for a living

This is really a book about the golden age of rock stars, let's call it 1963 to Live Aid. It's very enjoyable in a makes-you-wonder-if-you're-living-on-the-right-planet kind of way and seriously makes you question the standard of careers advice given to us in the 1970's. Rather than focus on French A level, I'd have been far better off to have learned to play the guitar as I could have joined Kajagoogoo or something.

Anyway, no use crying over spilt milk and on with the review.

In truth, none of Harrison, Clapton or Patti Boyd herself come out of this story particularly well. Patti is almost a 'Last Days of the Empire' caricature. George Harrison was lost without Epstein making most of his real life decisions for him and, if half of her claims about EC are true, the man has some pretty serious psychological issues.

In many respects, it's like reading about a slow-motion trainwreck ...... a must for all schadenfreude fans.

Interesting stories, but ...

Pattie's writing style is a bit haphazard. I felt like I was reading her journal. It was written in a very casual tone, like talking to a friend.
I don't blame Pattie. She has lived a very interesting life and let us peek into it. But the book was poorly edited. The story jumps around a lot. For example, after she leaves Eric, there are stories from when they were together that seem out of place. The timeline of her life wasn't laid out clearly. Occasionally, she provides a date or a year but the narrative jumps around a lot, especially at the end of the book.
Still, I enjoyed having a front row seat to see into the Beatles and Clapton's early years. I'm glad she told her story.

A life briefly wonderful then back to reality

Some people are the party and wherever they go the party comes with them. Pattie Boyd just happened to catch the eye of one of those people and the transition from George Harrison back to reality was distracted by Eric Clapton. There isn't really much said of George as much as meeting and marrying George laid the foundation for Eric. Most of her activity with Eric involved drugs, alcohol, passionate sex when he wasn't out of his mind (you must guess "the passion' meant sex), and abuse. For a girl who was the subject of many famous love songs she turned out to be mere mortal. Her description of life after Eric is that of Josephine Anyone. All of her subsequent trips and activities are described like someone trying to make the mundane sound exciting but they are just too accessible by the general public. The Pattie Boyd in the songs would not have felt she needed to sound interesting.

Give this book a chance no matter your level of expertise.

This book is indispensable no matter WHAT level of tarot or magic you are currently practicing. I am a beginner with tarot and had never ventured into spells whatsoever. I was hoping this book would help me get my feet wet, spell wise, by combining the symbology of what little tarot I do know with simple every day spells. It DID, and then some!

I was a little worried about the "365 days" aspect because what if it's the middle of Summer and you really want to do a spell that is listed for February 10th? I quickly discovered that the days don't really matter at all! If you want to do a spell a day and follow page by page, you can, but you don't need to. Of course some spells are aligned with certain events like an Equinox or special holiday, but mostly they are just brilliant spells for your every day life.

Each page is almost it's own little short story. Each spell takes you into its specific card and gives you a designed scenario, but also leaves it wide open for your own interpretation and intent. The spells are well thought out and detailed without being impossibly long and complicated with all kinds of ingredients that no one actually has lying around the house! Each spell also has an easy to recite incantation that doesn't make you feel embarrassed after saying it out loud.... There is also a nifty little historical tidbit on every page for that specific day.

My favorite part is the index. The index lists each spell under categories such as Personal Power, Finance and Money Matters, Travel, Letting Go, and so on. It also has an index specifically for each tarot card so you can go straight to the spells that directly utilize either your favorite card or a card you just pulled and is deeply speaking to you.

Personally, I randomly flip through it once a day and read whatever page pops up. Even if the spell doesn't relate, I still learn a thing or two about the card listed that helps me later on. Basically, give this book a chance. It's cheaper than a psychic reading or a sit down with a tarot reader and who knows, maybe if you believe hard enough, the spells may just work to bring all of those possibilities into your reality!

Something new for dabblers.

I don't consider myself a spiritual person but if I'm honest, paganism and wiccan beliefs have always called to something within me. In particular the practice of tarot card reading has always attracted me and for a few years now I've dabbled just a little. The history of it is fascinating and the practice of it is one I find grounding.

When an opportunity to try tarot in a new way—as part of a spell—arose through this book I was very eager to see it with a fresh set of eyes. I'm very happy to say that I found the spells presented here to be unexpectedly simple in a good way. I don't like making a to-do about my practice because it's something I do for myself the way some people choose meditation or other practices so the simplicity of each spell (with some exceptions) is to my taste.

If, like myself, you'd like to pursue your tarot related interests in a new way I very much like the spells here and would recommend picking it up to try them. You'll learn more about the cards and probably see them in new ways.

A Refreshing Take On Magic Through Tarot

Let me begin by saying I have Sasha's other book, 365 Tarot Spreads. I love it and work with it often.
Although 365 Spells appears complimentary to Sasha's 365 Tarot Spread book and because it also follows the same format, Sasha gives a theme for each day based on a historical event or happenstance, her 365 Spell book is entirely different kind of book.
Sasha invokes the heart of the tarot and brings the reader inside the cards to provoke desired change in our life in 365 Spells. She provides every sort of spell available. Love, financial, life path, dreams, etc.
It almost feels like just by reading the book is a spell in itself, if that makes sense.
This book would be an amazing tool for beginners. Sasha's 78 rituals to connect with each card bring the reader inside tarot in interesting and unexpected ways. For example, the Four of Swords becomes an ancient tomb where the bones of the knight rattle and speak and reveal older gods buried beneath him. Amazing!
I hesitated to write this review because I can see I will be working with 365 Tarot Spells for a long time to come. But I am so happy the book is finally here and at my fingertips, I had to post this five star review. If you love tarot, this book is a must-have!
