About the Author
Matthew Beaumont is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at University College London. He is the author of Utopia Ltd.: Ideologies of Social Dreaming in England 1870-1900 (2005), and the co-author, with Terry Eagleton, of The Task of the Critic: Terry Eagleton in Dialogue (2009). He has also edited Restless Cities (2010). He lives and walks in London.

You need tenacity!

The idea of this book was so enticing - I was reeled in by what it promised. An historical look at nocturnal London - fascinating! The reality of this offering however was a slow, turgid, heavy style of writing which was so ponderous - I got irritated, lost interest, found my whole effort to 'like' the book quite ludicrous.
I did give this book a really good try, 'gave it my best shot' (ask my friends who had long given up while I plodded on) but alas I didn't last the distance. A question : where was the Editor???

Walking the Midnight Streets

Charles Dickens was the best-known night walker - famously writing about his experiences of patrolling Victorian London during the hours of darkness in 'The Uncommercial Traveller' and thence in various of his novels. I was unaware, until reading this book, that the 'tradition' is as old as the city itself. Matthew Beaumont takes the reader on a 'literary walk' through the centuries, via the writings of the great, the good and the downright undeserving.
This is an excellent account of the tradition of staving off wakefulness by hitting the streets, and then using the experience as writing fodder. The research is extensive and impeccable, and there were many wry and amusing asides that kept me going through the 400 odd pages of closely written text.
I was given this book by one of my own readers who thought I might enjoy in it. Indeed I did. Recommended for all those interested in the history of London, seen from a very different angle. Also a fascinating read for ambulatory insomniacs. We are not alone.

A big disappointment

Far, far, far too long. And spoiled (at last for me) by the author's constant left wing political convictions.Every page dwells on the fate of the poor and the downtrodden often to the exclusion of all else.And they, as we all well know, are always with us! A lot of interesting facts and details about London - esp in the 16th and 17th centuries, but all of it well hidden behind his impenetrable thicket of politicized opinion.
