**Updated! Now professionally edited**

Raised and trained in seclusion at a secret fortress on the edge of the northern wilds of the Kingdom of Ashai, a young warrior called Rezkin is unexpectedly thrust into the outworld when a terrible battle destroys all that he knows. With no understanding of his life’s purpose and armed with masterful weapons mysteriously bestowed upon him by a dead king, Rezkin must travel across Ashai to find the one man who may hold the clues to his very existence.

Determined to adhere to his last orders, Rezkin extends his protection to an unlikely assortment of individuals he meets along the way, often leading to humorous and poignant incidents.

As if pursuing an elite warrior across a kingdom, figuring out who he is and why everyone he knows is dead, and attempting to find these so-called friends and protect them is not enough, strange things are happening in the kingdom. New dangers begin to arise that threaten not only Rezkin and his friends, but possibly everyone in Ashai.

Okay effort from a rookie writer
By Joel Delgado
Free the Darkness is a solid purchase overall, and I was able to enjoy the book despite some pretty annoying traits. I think the best way to review this book is to highlight the good and bad parts, and leave it at that.
I'll get the bad stuff out of the way first.
The BAD:
1. Needs a copy editor. There are quite a few homophones in this book. "Steal" when he meant "Steel", "Heal" when he meant "Heel" etc.
2. While the plot is an interesting IDEA, there really isn't much that goes on. Mysterious child trained since birth to be an expert fighter/spy/healer/something sets off to find out who he is and what he was meant to do. While he gets in a lot fights and does a few things, most of it seems written to show how awesome he is, and nothing really happens. He travels from one place to another. Thats...about it.
3. Speaking about how awesome he is...wow, this guy is a real Gary Stu. He is literally the best in the world EVER at EVERYTHING. Fighting, spycraft, history, tactics, blah blah blah. Nobody can injure him, nobody can outsmart him, no lock or door can stop him. He never even gets on anyone's bad side or makes any enemies. While people get mad at him, they admit he did nothing wrong and it's their own fault they don't like him. It gets boring after the first 100 pages. Also, there are at least 50 (not kidding) mentions of how physically perfect he is: his physique, eyes, hair, teeth, you name it. In fact, the women in this book only exist to obsess over him. Every. Single. Female. does nothing but swoon and fight over him. That's it. So if you like strong feminine characters, look elsewhere.
4. Speaking of the characters, they're all flat. Everyone is simply a foil for the awesomeness that is the MC. And while he COULD be an interesting character, he's not. He never gets angry, or happy, he never has any emotions at all. He never makes any mistakes, or has any character development.
The GOOD:
1. This is a lot of book for 4 bucks. So many self-published fantasy books are only 2-300 pages and they're read in a night. at 460 pages, you're getting your money's worth.
2. Straightforward action. While I enjoy epic fantasy that has underlying themes such as religion, right vs wrong, etc, once in a while it's refreshing to read a book that doesn't get bogged down with this stuff. Think of this as an action movie, not a drama.
3. It's a page turner. There's not really any slow parts to Free the Darkness. The pace (not the plot) moves along quickly, and there aren't lengthy descriptions of lavish dinners or clothing. (I probably should've added this to the "Bad" section, but there's no real description of setting whatsoever. There's a kingdom, and other places, but no real world builidng, political situations, etc. There's hints that this might get developed in the 2nd book, but they're largely absent here)
4. Semi-novel concept. It's hard to have an original concept in fantasy. Everything's been done. The protagonist in this story is somewhat novel though. Secluded from "normal" society since birth, he enters the world when he's 19 and has no idea how to interact with other people. It makes for some fun reading, though there's some missed potential here as well. The author could've explored this concept a bit better.

Overall, this is a guilty pleasure book that's worth reading if action fantasy is your cup of tea. It's got graphic violence but I wouldn't label it dark fantasy. It's a good way to spend a saturday afteroon if you don't want to read something that makes you think. Hopefully the character and plot development improve in book 2. I'll be checking it out, but I don't have high expectations.

Lucky find

I have to say that this was one of the best books of the year that I've read . The dialogue between the characters was hilarious at times. Rezkins character was my favourite, ok his character seems farfetched at times being able to do everything that he can at only nineteen, but you can see his character and emotions growing with the story . I will be eagerly awaiting book 2 , and hope the author keeps writing the following books in the same style with rezkin as the main character, not to go same road as Anthony Ryan's ravens shadow or peter v bretts the demon cycle.

Amazing start, A must read for fantasy lovers
By juxta_posed
Really enjoyed this book. I love it when I find something that is just a bit diffrent to read and it turns out as well as this one.

The story follows Rezkin and shows a bit of a brutal upbringing but mainly focuses on his journey after leaving his training. The thing that makes this different than most fantasy books in my opinion is how Rez interacts with everyone else. He has no clue how to respond to interpersonal relationships at all due to the way he was raised.

This leads to what could be a problem for some readers. I can see where his constant reference to "Rules" and "Skills" could become tiresome for some, but the consistency that the author brings this to the story worked for me. As the story continues Rez becomes slowly more human, at the beginning he is nearly robotic, very Terminator now that I think of it.

The editing is good, I only noticed three or four word misplacement's, the where it should have said he, and board for bored. they were few and far between making this one of the better edited books I have read from what I assume is an indie author in a very long time.

I would give this a huge nod to be put into your to be read pile if you like fantasy at all. It is a steal considering it is on Kindle Unlimited and comes in over 400 pages. I can not wait to see more from this author!
