Evidence for Psi: Thirteen Empirical Research Reports, by Damien Broderick

"Psi" is the term used by researchers for a variety of demonstrable but elusive psychic phenomena. This collection of essays provides a detailed survey of the evidence for psi at the level of scientific examination. Key features of apparent psi phenomena are reviewed, including precognition and remote perception (knowledge of future or distant events that cannot be inferred from present information), presentiment (physiological responses to stimuli that have not yet occurred), the effects of human emotions on globally dispersed machines, the possible impact of local sidereal time on psi performance, and the familiar feeling of knowing who is calling on the phone. Special attention is given to those phenomena that make it difficult for scientists to get a clear understanding of psi. The body of psi research, while complex and frustrating, is shown to contain sufficiently compelling positive evidence to convince the rational open-minded observer that psi is real, and that one or more physical processes probably underlie observed psi phenomena.

Review
"As science advances, the lines between fantasy and fact can bend and sometimes break. Pay attention while a line is bending and you can gain startling glimpses into whole new realms of discovery. Broderick and Goertzel have been paying attention." --Dean Radin, Chief Scientist, Institute of Noetic Sciences

Comment about Evidence for Psi
By Carlos S. Alvarado
The editors state in the introduction that: “On balance, we believe, the
most direct and objective interpretation of the corpus of available psi
data is that psi is probably a real phenomenon, though an odd and poorly
understood one.” They also write: “The evidence for psi speaks for
itself, if you take the time to listen to it. The more thoroughly and
closely you listen, the louder it speaks—even if sometimes it seems to
be speaking a confusing and foreign language, with ongoing changes to
its vocabulary and grammar.” This does not means they are not aware of
all kind of problems and of the need for further studies. Their
introduction will be read with profit. It not only puts the topic in
context, but it outlines problems, methodologies, skepticism, and
various issues of interpretation.

While some of the chapters may be too technical (in terms of statistics)
for the general reader, they present excellent reviews, offering, in
fact, a state of the art of most aspects of experimental parapsychology.
In fact, as such, this is the type of book we need to
disseminate the research work both inside and, particularly, outside of
parapsychology.

The GO-TO Book For Psi Research
By Roger D. Nelson
I received my contributor's copy a few days ago, and I want to say the book is a tour de force. Though I haven't read many of the articles, I know the people whose work you have anthologized, and congratulate you on bringing the serious professionals to the table. It would be interesting to skip around, but I started at the beginning (where real readers always go) and found your and Ben's intro material to be excellent. Just right as a balance between information and the advertizing that's needed to get people going.

Thank you both. I think this and the companion book you plan for theory will be the go-to for serious psi interest for years.

Proper disclosure: I am one of the contributors to this book.

The perfect resource to become acquainted with the state of play of contemporary scientific psi research
By Hannah Jenkins
As a psi researcher, I am extremely happy to have a new comprehensive overview of the state of play of the evidence for psi to which I can steer the many people who ask me ‘but is there any scientific evidence for psi?’ Yes there is, and here it is neatly compressed into an easy-to-read and grasp volume of 13 essays written by contemporary scientists curated carefully by the authors Damien Broderick and Ben Goertzel.

The introduction to the book serves as an excellent introduction to the topic at large. It is also where the authors make a defense of the book’s focus on laboratory evidence (rather than anecdotal). They make a good case that this is the area of interest at the moment, but I was glad to see they also predict that ‘once the lessons of these restricted experimental domains are grasped fully, and effectively theorized, psi research will shift focus back toward the larger world experience’.

The authors are well-versed in the controversial nature of the enquiry into this field and present the evidence without the usual bias (crazy believer or blinkered skeptic) that tends to dominate popular discussion of the topic. They don’t come to their conclusions lightly or without showing how. The selection of contributors is wise, all are major contemporary contributors to the field who are also able to present their work in an engaging manner. Together they cover the main areas that have been pursued in contemporary laboratory psi research.

Though the book contains a very useful chapter which engages thoughtfully with the skeptical perspective, the authors acknowledge that none of the contributors are skeptics. This could be seen as a shortfall, but they respond to this by noting that when they set out to find contributors for the book, they discovered that none of the representatives of this view ‘have the scope of knowledge and interest to write review chapters on psi data’. A valid point and indicative of the situation that has stymied intelligent discussion about psi in the mainstream in recent years.

I couldn’t agree more that the conversation needs to move on and deal with the actual scientific evidence. This book is the perfect chance to become acquainted with it.
