I can't say that I'd give this book 5 stars, because I just needed it for a class. It is very simply organized-it's easy to find what you need in a timely manner (such as when taking timed tests online) ;) but that's about it.

If this is the only motor speech book you can afford - buy it!!!

This book is amazing! It has all the information there that you need to confidently assess, diagnose and manage motor speech disorders. It is well set out and allows you to return to specific areas to look things up very easily. The accompanying online learning trains your ear to identify the different types of motor speech disorders. I have learned so much from studying this text which is directly relevant in my work as a speech pathologist with adult acquired communication disorders. My only criticism would be the chapter on psychiatric conditons and motor speech disorders - it really didn't seem to understand the complexities of this area or describe it very well. Otherwise, highly recommended.

A fascinating account of the new Haitian art born from the ravages of economic depression, natural catastrophies and depravations resulting from the evil deportation policies of the USA.Gone are the pretty pretty market scenes and the lush jungle scenes reminding of Douanier Rousseau.These days the Baron rules .
The book is an excellent addition to the indispensable Sacred Arts of Haitian Vodou, also by Cosentino.Another great new publication on Haitian Art is the beautifully published exhibition catalog KAFOU.

Wow! I am in love with this new serial by Jessica Ryan. This is the second installment of Taming The Dragon and Ryan has once again demonstrated her amazing talent and astounding imagination. She gives her readers a wonderful magical journey full of wonder and fantasy. And a sexy dragon! And who doesn't love dragons - especially sexy ones? Right? Exciting! Well Written! Original! Smart! Imaginative! Thrilling! Addictive! Compelling! Arousing! Romantic! Sexy! The story is well developed and well written. The dialog is smart and eloquent. The characters are interesting and intriguing. All three elements combine to give the reader a wonderful adventure full of magic and fantasy. The curvy fair haired, Mara, is the daughter of Erik, a village elder. She has the bluest eyes of anyone in the kingdom. She is instantly attracted to the handsome Val Woodshadow when he arrives in her remote village from the crown city, Atherny. Val is the most famous dragon-slaying knight in all of Escrimea. There has never been such fanfare for a visitor. So when Val requests that she guide him on his journey to slay a dragon and agrees to marry her, Mara is surprised, shocked and flattered but also excited at the prospect of wealth and riches and of leaving her very dull village life. But it only takes one day for Mara to realize that her soon to be husband is an arrogant blowhard who does nothing but brag about how everyone worships him. After being attacked and severely injured by goblins, Mara quickly learns that Val's intentions for her are only sadistic and sinister. And then she realizes that Val Woodshadow is the real evil of her world. What in the name of heavens has she gotten herself into! And just how can she get away from the cruel Val? So as she fears this may be her dying breath, she opens her eyes to a beautiful white dragon with sapphire blue eyes. Aleksander is a white dragon, the most powerful and greatest in the world and is built to live in the snow with a weapon not of fire but one of icy death. Mara awakens to find that she has been healed by three women who live with Aleksander who as it turns out is also a very handsome man. She discovers that she has been given to the dragon by Val after his defeat. What? She belongs to no man and certainly to no dragon! She must escape and warn her village of possible retribution by the psychotic Val Woodshadow. Mara is not impressed with Aleksander's demanding and tyrannical ways and balks at him and her captivity. But Aleksander is not interested in Mara's concerns. He has never been interested in humans' petty problems. He is a mighty dragon and is above them in every way. He is repulsed by humans and would never be attracted to a human female! Or would he? Aleksander finally decides that he needs a distraction from his boring life and decides to pillage and destroy the countryside thereby reminding the humans of his omnipotence and greatness. But most of all, his greatest desire is to now destroy Val Woodshadow. Mara knows that she must do something to stop Aleksander. She simply can not allow him to hurt innocent humans. But what can she do? She is merely a human with no weapons. But Mara soon learns that she may possess a very powerful weapon after all but when Mara decides to use that weapon - just who will be captured - the dragon or Mara? Oh my! So good! So dreamy! The more you read the more you begin to Love and root for Aleksandr. He has a soft side that will melt your heart and at the same time is so intense that he gets your pulse racing. Mara is a strong willed woman that you root for during the whole thing . She keeps him on his toes and wanting her more and more. I don't know about you but i cant wait to see what happens between him and Val. Its getting intense. If you are thinking about buying this its so worth it you wont be disappointed.

Ms. Ryan is an exceptional storyteller! Part 2 of Taming The Dragon is an ongoing tribulation of Mara and Alek the dragon! Alek is of course acting like a man! You know Mara is a strong willed lady who doesn't know what she wants and finally discovers she wants the dragon! Whew! Through it all? We want what Mara wants! Does she really want to Tame the Dragon??? I cannot wait till book three comes and we find out!! I loved it!!!! Thanks to Ms. Ryan, we have read 2 great books!!

Using the concept of an "adaptive toolbox," a repertoire of fast and frugal rules for decision making under uncertainty, it attempts to impose more order and coherence on the idea of bounded rationality. The contributors view bounded rationality neither as optimization under constraints nor as the study of people's reasoning fallacies. The strategies in the adaptive toolbox dispense with optimization and, for the most part, with calculations of probabilities and utilities. The book extends the concept of bounded rationality from cognitive tools to emotions; it analyzes social norms, imitation, and other cultural tools as rational strategies; and it shows how smart heuristics can exploit the structure of environments.

State of the Art on Behavioral Choice Theory

Suppose we wanted to predict how an expert billiards player would hit a certain shot. We would measure the angles and distances, get the coefficients of elasticity of the balls and the bumpers, and we would solve a set of differential equations. But is that how the billiards player figures out what to do? Of course not! We don't know exactly what he would do, but if the authors of this book had their way, we'd give up on the differential equations (optimization theory) and find the "fast and frugal heuristic" actually used by the billiards player.
This book is the product of a conference of experts in the field. It includes wonderful contributions by the editors and their coworkers on how decisions are actually made, and argues persuasively that fast and frugal is almost as good as full optimization, and at much lower cost.
But the volume is a lot broader than that. It includes contributions on the role of emotions in decision-making (Dan Fessler), learning in animal societies (Keven Laland) and social insects (Thomas Seeley), and a lot of material on the role of culture in human societies (Boyd, Richerson, McCabe, Smith, Henrich, and others). This is important new material, very up to date.
Gigerenzter and Selten go to great lengths to cast aspersions on the old-fashioned "optimization subject to constraints" perspective, but their arguments are not persuasive. They make a category error: they maintain that models that use optimization assume that the agents the models describe use optimization. This is just silly. Just as the billiards player does not solve differential equations, decision-makers do not do complete optimization, even though we may use such models to describe their behavior.
The editors believe that optimization subject to constraints is dead in behavioral theory, but they're dead wrong. That's in fact what they are doing, but they prefer to call it "bounded rationality."
Finally, I should note that the work of Eduardo Zambrano (look up his home page) shows that the SEU (Subjective Expected Utility model---the enemy of all bounded rationalers) actually is behaviorally universal, in the sense that one can always find a set of Bayesian priors for which an observed set of behaviors is optimal.
But don't let these petty methodological issues get you down. The book is a great collection by the authors of major work in behavioral theory.

Human Rationality and Evolution

This edited volume is an important addition to the work on human decision-making under conditions of uncertainty, in which people use "rules of thumb" to produce cost-effective decisions that are not strictly "rational." From the psychological literature, the work of Kahneman and Tversky is well know (and has been rewarded with international recognition). However, they do not explicitly link such behavior (often referred to as "heuristics") to evolution and biology. And they tend to define these "rules of thumb" as rather poor guides to decision making.

The essays in this edited volume provide a different--and more optimistic picture--of such heuristics. The contributors provide evidence and logic to suggest that evolution has led to the development of decision making shortcuts that "work" reasonably well.

One can disagree with certain aspects of this work (they may be a bit harsh on Kahneman and Tversky and their peers; they may be overly optimistic about some of the heuristics that they mention). Nonetheless, this work is a wonderful introduction to a literature on how humans actually think and decide--rather than relying on abstract conceptualizations often prevalent in the social sciences, including the simplistic "rational choice" theory ascendant in several social science disciplines. This book represents a welcome corrective to such perspectives.

In order to keep up with the latest in developmental biology, biotechnology, genomics and proteomics, Richard has links with a number of companies and academic institutions including the Fraunhofer IME in Germany, RWTH Aachen, the University of Warwick and Cranfield University where he lectures in biotechnology/genomics and scientific writing and management.
