About the Author
James C. Crimmins has been a professional persuader for 27 years, mainly as chief strategic officer of DDB Chicago and a worldwide brand-planning director with clients such as Budweiser, McDonald’s, State Farm, and Betty Crocker. He has earned a PhD in sociology and a master’s degree in statistics, and has taught integrated marketing communication at Northwestern University’s Medill School. Actually, rather than “secrets,” James Crimmins carefully identifies and then brilliantly examines some of the most significant revelations from a number of recent research studies that identify “neuromarketing techniques to influence anyone.” He observes: “Recent discoveries in psychology, behavioral economics, and neuroscience dramatically expand what we know about how we choose and should change how we attempt to persuade. We’ve learned that consciousness is not central to most of our decisions. It feels central, but scientific evidence shows that consciousness usually takes a back seat. This turns the conventional wisdom on its head and may explain why persuasion attempts, whether of one person or of many, often don’t work.” What does? Also, how and why? Crimmins wrote this book to answer these questions.

Most of us are infrequently in a situation that requires us to persuade others to accept ideas, opinions, recommendations, etc. This could be characterized as a “lizard encounter.” We face three separate but interdependent challenges:

1. Understand what the lizard is and does...what it isn’t and doesn’t do.
2. Understand the lizard’s language.
3. Understand the lizard’s “hot buttons” and know how to punch them.

James Crimmins thoroughly prepares his reader to respond effectively to all three challenges. These are among his concluding remarks: “Because the remarkably capable lizard is in charge of most decisions, reasoned argument is a waste of time. You can only persuade the lizard if you speak its language and show the lizard a better way to fulfill its desires.”

You would be well-advised to read this book before your competition does.

An Insightful, Fascinating and Practical Book

A lot of "Secrets" books out there cover things that really aren't so secretive. It's stuff everybody pretty much knows already. Not so with "7 Secrets of Persuasion". Tapping into the latest in neuroscience research and combining that with "real world" examples, Crimmins easy-to-read book reveals little known, yet fascinating ways into how the brain processes information, how people really make decisions (which they are totally unaware of), and the kinds of messages that can move people to take action -- contrary to what many professionals in marketing, advertising, sales, politics, etc. would contend.

The insights - or should I say secrets! - this book brings to light into how the mind works and the practical applications of those insights make "7 Secrets of Persuasion" required reading for anyone interested in developing communication with greater relevance, originality and impact.

You don't have to be in marketing, advertising to benefit from the many insights on persuasion that are included in this book. As a wife and a mother, I'm very inspired by Crimmins' tips for effective personal persuasion. Chapter 10 is a must read if you have ever or will ever wish to change an unhealthy behavior of a loved-one, for example. It could be something as small as trying to persuade your teenagers to be more energy efficient around the house or as big as persuading your spouse to stop smoking. You're not going to get anywhere by lecturing them. "Persuasion in general, and personal persuasion in particular, can't be about what I, the persuader, want. The only way to persuade anyone of anything is to talk about what they want and show them how to get it." That quote from chapter 10 is just one of the hidden gems I discovered in this book. I've learned a great deal from reading the entire book and I'm already making it work for me.

This book is like a Biography of a famous person

This book is like a Biography of a famous person, but instead it is a Biography of a Great Airplane. The original requirement was for a new escort fighter for the Strategic Air Command but it failed to perform that unrealistic mission. But because of it's basically sound and capable design, excellent speed, payload, and survivability, the McDonnell F-101 "Voodoo" evolved into three separate mission aircraft---Tactical Fighter (F-101A), Air Defense Interceptor (F-101B), and Tactical Reconnaissance Fighter, (RF-101C)
This book covers all of the problems encountered and solved during the design, modification and flight testing required to make the "Voodoo" the outstanding century series aircraft it was. The author covers every modification in detail to make the book almost like a mystery novel. You get to know the people that designed and made the aircraft and the then you get to see those that flew the aircraft on the different types of missions and
how the "Voodoo" performed. And finally you get to see how it performed in combat in accomplishing the reconnaissance mission in South East Asia and the sacrifices made by our Air Force pilots.

This book is packed full of color photographs of all the variants of the F-101 Voodoo. It also has very detailed and complete information on the history from beginning to end of service. Worth every penny!

Sensational study on a Cold War thoroughbred

If an aviation book deserves to be called "labor of love", then it has to be this one. Quite obviously the product of long and thorough research, it is the most complete coverage of the legendary McDonnell heavyweight ever. Both the development and the operational service of all variants are covered, the photographic documentation is nothing short of sensational and includes many as-yet unseen photographs. As has always been the case with the type, the reconnaissance versions get greater coverage than the interceptor ones, which is reasonable, as they have seen significant combat action over Cuba, Vietnam and mainland China (under the Taiwanese flag). Interesting aspects of the operational employment of the interceptor versions by the ANG and the CAF are included, and I was more than happy to read quite detailed passages on the ANG's employment of the RF-101G/H/B, in particular the call-up in response to the USS Pueblo crisis. And at long last, some photos and data on late, post-Vietnam RF-101C operations by TAC & ANG ...
Definitely the book of the year (or perhaps of the decade?) for those fascinated by Cold War USAF jets. Very highly recommended.

Now at the front in France with his older brother Charlie he stands a lonely nighttime vigil for reasons that are not explained until the book's end, watching the minutes tick by and reflecting on his past. Using first-person narration, Morpurgo draws readers into this young man's life, relating memories that are idyllic, sobering, and poignant. Tommo thinks upon the role he played in his father's accidental death, the adventures that he shared with Charlie, his relationship with his childhood friend Molly, and the experiences that he has had since entering the war. Finally, he describes how Charlie disobeyed a direct order to stay with him after he was wounded in action, fully aware of this decision's dire consequences. While this story is not based on any one individual, Morpurgo has personalized the British tactic of executing their own soldiers "for cowardice or desertion," memorializing these men without passing judgment. While readers see the events through Tommo's eyes, the author does not lose sight of the war's effects on the teen's friends and family. Reminders come in the form of letters from home, relationships with other soldiers, and observations of battles. Charlie may be too perfect, almost a Christ figure, but it's Thomas' viewpoint of the brother he loves. Suspense builds right to the end, which is shocking, honest, and unforgettable. Cooper's (Jewish Holidays All Year 'Round) thoughtful if belabored novel centers on 12-year-old Sam, with a Jewish father and Christian mother, who feels caught in the middle-especially this holiday season. Since the family dog has pulled down the Christmas tree (or "Hanukkah bush," as his father insists they call it), presents will be arranged around the menorah, for the first time putting more emphasis on Hanukkah than Christmas. On Christmas Eve, which coincides with the first day of Hanukkah, Sam witnesses the clashing traditions of his feuding Jewish and Christian grandmothers, and he decides to ask God something that has been plaguing him: "What I want to know is, why can't people practicing different religions get along?" This question assumes greater proportions when Sam's class begins studying the Holocaust ("How could You let this happen?" he asks God), and when the boy learns they had a relative who was a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp. In a rather strained subplot, Sam becomes smitten with Heather, a classmate he thinks is "cute," but whose mean-spiritedness (he finally realizes) is rooted in racism. Although the narrative becomes encumbered by some rather pointed exposition and repetitious discussion, Cooper introduces a likable young protagonist and raises some searching questions about tolerance, injustice, commitment to religion and communicating with God. Tommo thinks upon the role he played in his father's accidental death, the adventures that he shared with Charlie, his relationship with his childhood friend Molly, and the experiences that he has had since entering the war. Finally, he describes how Charlie disobeyed a direct order to stay with him after he was wounded in action, fully aware of this decision's dire consequences. While this story is not based on any one individual, Morpurgo has personalized the British tactic of executing their own soldiers "for cowardice or desertion," memorializing these men without passing judgment. A war story that has appeal for everyone

Tom Peaceful is whiling away a long night remembering what his life has been like up to now. He narrates the events that brought him to France during WWI with his brother Charlie, a rebellious and good hearted soul. Tom has to lie about his age to join the army, but feels he has to come in order to keep his brother "out of trouble." But trouble comes anyway. Tom's memories serve to make the Peacefuls and their close bond real, and help the reader to understand just how alien his war experience is to him.

My new favorite book!

First and foremost, this is not your average mermaid story. So much of the mermaid genre is filled with retellings of The Little Mermaid—which, you know, gets old. Everything about Rescue Sirens is fresh, new, and original, from concept to world-building to character development.

In particular, I loved the idea of humans being derived from mermaids, creating an ancient bond between the two species. This approach opened the door to a whole new world of mythology, which includes mermaids disguised as lifeguards to protect their above-water kin. And, as with many ocean-centric stories, this book stresses the importance of ocean conservation and preservation, not only for the mermaid’s sake but for humans, as well.

Another concept I adored was mermaids viewing books from the human world as treasures, using them to understand the world above. For someone who spends most of her time free time reading books (and the rest of her time thinking about them), this hit me right in the heart. Books are treasures, you guys!

The writing is fast-paced and filled with beautiful imagery, from the beaches of Miami to the underwater home of the mermaids; the story never felt like it was floundering in exposition or explanation. By ten pages in, I was getting a strong urge to drop everything and head to the nearest beach. Added bonus, the writers seem love puns just as much as I do (“Hey there, gillfriend” is my personal favorite).

One of the strongest anchors of this story is the characters. Each mermaid feels fully realized as a member of the Rescue Siren group, bringing forth their own unique set of skills, talents, and personalities—together, they click beautifully. While there is mention of mermen, this was very much a female-centric story, without (thankfully) any sort of love story in sight.

Hmmm…a group of strong female characters with their own strengths, coming together to fight for a higher purpose (or should I say, porpoise)? Is this the Sailor Moon of mermaids? I digress…

As is the case with Chris Sanders’ animated work, the main theme of this story is about family and, by extension, what it means to belong. While each mermaid differs greatly from the other (right down to their mermaid tails, which vary from dolphin to seal to blue marlin), it is their differences that make them stronger and work together as a team—even if it does take some time for everyone to get along. Just as in life, we don’t get to chose who is in our family, but we can choose who we become and who we chose as our family. Kelby, one of our leading ladies, particularly must overcome anxiety and come to terms with what it means to truly be herself, and her personal growth is beautiful to see unfold.

Also making a splash in this book is the phenomenal artwork, with internal illustrations provided by the fabulous Genevieve Tsai and cover/character artwork done as a collaboration between Chris Sanders, Edgar Delgado, and Teresa Martinez. With all hands on deck, the artwork is (needless to say) gorgeous.

This was the adorable, fun, cute story I had hoped for—and more. The future of Rescue Sirens holds lots of potential, and I am excited for the next installment in the series. I can’t wait to “sea” where the story goes next!

Rescue Sirens: Search for the Atavist makes the everyday superheroism of first responders and the true strength of teamwork accessible through this delightful tale of friendship, camaraderie, and mission orientation. If I’d had this story when I was a teenager, I guarantee I would have been inspired to become a first responder a lot earlier than I did. I know there are young people out there with lifesaving potential who will be as inspired by this tale of lifesaving work as I am, and this is a great story for young readers interested in first response, even those who’ve never been captured by the magic of mermaid mythology.

I love a few things deeply and intensely. The ocean. Mermaids. Women in first responder lines of work. Strong female friendships. The works of Chris Sanders, whose projects (including Disney’s Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, and Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon) have without fail delighted me. So when I found out that Jessica Steele-Sanders and Chris Sanders had combined all those into one book (with engaging, charming illustrations by Genevieve Tsai), I immediately had to have it.

As a displaced Florida resident missing family and friends on the other side of the country, I finished this story about strong female friendships, longing for the sea, and saving lives in book form, feeling more and more homesick for Florida with every page. Even if I wasn’t from Florida, and very susceptible to a deep longing for that place, Rescue Sirens would still pull me in to that desire for a South Florida sense of belonging.

The character of Kelby, who spends the story undergoing the journey to find home herself, is a pleasant person to follow on that journey. There is something so comforting about Kelby’s journey, not just to find her spiritual home in the sea that has always called to her, but to find a home, a family, a team with which to daily make the world better, safer, than it would be without them. The pull to home, the pull to find the place where you belong, is a deep and powerful pull and to see Kelby achieve it and more is a beautiful fulfillment of that wish.

All the characters, actually, are pleasant people to take the journey with. Each mermaid is distinct and motivated based on her own values and interests, valued for her eccentricities and for her competence. Pippa’s outlandish interests and childlike glee over human culture is never treated as a diminishment of her lifesaving competence. Maris, interested in appearances and achieving the high life, is still a welcoming and friendly face among the group, a supportive maker of smoothies whose drama is an expression of enthusiasm and not a detriment to the group’s unity.

So it might seem surprising when I say that one of the best aspects of the group dynamics is the conflict. There’s no cattiness or conflict for the sake of conflict, as is unfortunately common in a lot of female-populated media. Echo, the particularly confrontational mermaid, has hints at a past informing the chip on her shoulder. We don’t know all the reasons she has to stir the pot, but at least one of them is the high standards she sets for herself and others.

High standards and ambition are the hallmarks of lead mermaid Nim’s character, too. Ambitious for earned leadership and competence at her lifesaving job, Nim strives not just to be the boss, but to be the boss correctly, in the face of real stress and urgency. She encapsulates the lifeguard’s dedication and skill, the positive ambition of making the beach a safer place than it would have been without her. The book is as much about Nim achieving her leadership skills as it is about Kelby, the lost mermaid, coming home.

The story is refreshingly full of young women supporting each other, challenging each other, thinking of each other as skilled and beautiful and worthwhile. And most of all, Rescue Sirens is full of girls being a righteous emergency-responding life-saving unit. Easily my favorite aspect of Rescue Sirens: Search for the Atavist is watching them have their differences, then put them aside for the sake of the mission. Their team feels so true as a lifesaving unit, a set of competent first responders putting aside panic and differences for the sake of the mission.

The mermaids’ control over whether or not to make legs is refreshing after so much mermaid media that relies on a mermaid’s inability not to grow a tail when splashed to generate drama. There are still rules by which the mermaids must live and can be exposed, but removing the lack of choice in the matter of whether to have a tail or not gives our Rescue Sirens an agency and control that lends itself to greater adventures without losing the urgency and danger of being outed.

The setting itself is huge, open and rich with possibility for future stories. The mermaids’ anatomies are based on real local sea creatures, allowing for a range of diversity and culture through environmental zones across the ocean. The distinct tribes we might encounter in the future, the lives of other groups of Rescue Sirens on beaches across the world, creates a setting rich with magic and diversity, with life-saving magical women everywhere there are beaches to be protected, and oceans to swim in.

I’ve read Rescue Sirens: the Search for the Atavist twice since purchasing it. I will read it several more times, while I wait eagerly for more stories of this delightful world to arrive in my waiting hands.

Well Worth The Wait!

It took me a while to get my copy, (I have the first edition) but it was definitely worth the wait. This is the mermaid story I've been dying for. There's a few tropes I've long grown tired of in mermaid stories. Mermaids doing human stuff with very little mermaid lore or action, romance as the key plot, and contrived "girl fights". Rescue Sirens avoids all of these. The mermaid mythos at play here is fresh and well thought out. There's plenty of time spent as mermaids doing mermaid stuff with high stakes action. The main plot is not centered around romance, so adventure and teamwork get to be key in this tale. Lastly, the characters all feel very genuine and get plenty of opportunity to breathe. Conflicts that arise feel justified and their interactions as a team are fantastic. I very much appreciate the author's attention to detail for the Rescue Sirens as first responders as well as their unique biological abilities as mermaids. I also love that they take the intended young audience seriously.

Occasionally, there's political points made that feel a little out of place, but I think they just stand out to me because I live where hybrids might as well be sin-machines and the phrase "climate change" is regarded as a vulgarity. The Rescue Sirens are devoted to protecting humans as well as educating them about Mother Ocean, so it makes sense that this is a legitimate concern for them.

Overall, it is a merit to the book that it's easy to imagine yourself among these characters on the gorgeous beaches of Florida. If you're like me and H2O Just Add Water just isn't giving you your fin-fix, this book is just what the doctor ordered. I highly recommend it for mermaid fans young and old.

Can a Christian Have a Demon?

Finally! This book is full of clear how to's to help us do the things we have learned about and wanted to implement in our lives, but didn't know how. If you are a Christian and wondering why things aren't working no matter what you try, your heart will be flooded with light as you read. A book full of "Aha!" moments. Great help with insomnia, too. This will be a go-to resource for my library.

For the first time since she moved from mass market originals to hardcover (with 1996's Harvest), Gerritsen offers a sequel to last year's bestselling The Surgeon. It's a smart move, as in that novel this popular author introduced a terrific lead character, Jane Rizzoli, a female Boston homicide detective who rivals Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta for intensity and complexity. Her nemesis, serial killer Warren Hoyt, aka the Surgeon, whom Rizzoli sent to prison, returns here, too; that's not so terrific, as he's basically a Hannibal Lecter clone, though Gerritsen does pair him up this time with a second serial killer, known among cops as the Dominator. The discovery of the corpse of one of the Dominator's victims in a ritzy Boston suburb gets the action moving. Rizzoli notes connections between the Dominator's handiwork and that of Hoyt, and visits Hoyt behind bars. Eventually it's revealed that Hoyt and the Dominator have contacted one another by mail. Hoyt escapes and links up with the Dominator, and it's no surprise that Rizzoli is their number one target. The novel is suspenseful and stuffed with an encyclopedia's worth of tightly detailed forensic lore. Rizzoli gets a new love interest (Hoyt killed her last one, in The Surgeon), an FBI agent, which is handled with realism and subtlety, but her fuming at man's inhumanity to woman may grate on male readers. There are first-person italicized passages from Hoyt's point of view, a genre cliche, and at times the grisliness of the murders tends toward sensationalism. This strong thriller should sell very well, but it's not Gerritsen's best.

Rizzoli and Isles: Together again!

'The Apprentice', by Tess Gerritsen, is the second of the Rizzoli and Isles series. When Rizzoli finally puts Warren Hoyt, otherwise known as The Surgeon, in prison for life, she thought that she was through with him. Just like 'The Surgeon', which was first of this series, 'The Apprentice' is a real page turner.

Detective Rizzoli gets called into a string of murders because the MO is the same as her old nemesis, Warren Hoyt. Hoyt, the man of her nightmares.
Hoyt. The man who pinned her to the floor with a scapel in both of her hands. Hoyt. The devil incarnate.

Even from his prison cell, it seems as though he was still killing. A copycat? Doubtful. Jane Rizzoli believed that Hoyt had somehow engineered these murders. Every detail was there, from the teacup on the husband's knee to the folded nightgown in the bedroom. It was Hoyt all over. Jane gets the courage up to face Hoyt in prison. She is looking for some answers to questions that would help her solve these murders. Hoyt, who is obsessed with Jane, was pleased that she had come to him, but was no help, of course. Maura Isles, the Medical Examiner, helps to keep her best friend, Jane, on an even keel, working tirelessly to find this maniacal killer. Every murder that Jane worked in the case, brings more memories of Hoyt to her mind.

We see the world through Rizzoli's eyes and feel the hate that she has for the one man that she cannot get out of her life, Hoyt. Ms. Gerritsen has done it again. I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Apprentice' and gave it 5 stars. I am looking forward to more of Rizzoli and Isles books.

Excellent story

I did not like Jane Rizzoli at first, in the first book The Surgeon. But the character intrigued me enough to read this second book and at least now I understand the character better. These two books have been a wild ride, and I look forward to the next book in the series.

This is not a TV Rizzoli. The book is much darker, and violent. Enjoyed the mystery very much. Makes me want to read more of Gerritson's work.
