About the Author
Sigmund Hering is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, Vienna. Among his teachers were Rossbach (trumpet) and Schrecker (composition). In 1923, he became the first trumpet in the Cleveland Orchestra, and in 1925 accepted a similar position with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the leadership of Leopold Stokowski. Mr. Hering remained a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra for forty years, retiring under the baton of Eugene Ormandy. Mr. Hering was on the faculty of the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia and taught privately. His books of study have been published throughout the United States and Europe.

Nice, simple book

Though these are not Hering's own compositions, the duets in this book are a good sample of (mainly) several composers from the Baroque period. Included are Bach, Handel, T�rk, Purcell, and several others.

Another enjoyable military romance from Amy J Fetzer!

Rick Wyatt is a Marine dedicated to the Corps. When he is wounded in combat and returns home to recuperate, he is annoyed to find that his commanding officer has engaged a nurse to stay with him until he's recovered. Having a nursemaid is bad enough, but when she's your estranged wife, it's almost unbearable. Kate moved out a year ago and all the feelings Rick has been suppressing for the past twelve months have all come surging back to the surface. God, how he's missed her, but she's the one who left, so he'll be damned if he lets her know it. Will he ever understand why she left or maybe find a way to convince her to stay?

Kate never stopped loving Rick and didn't want to leave, but she couldn't continue to live with a man who couldn't or wouldn't confide in her. She knows he feels things deeply - just not with her. He never really needed her and now he only needs her around until he recovers. But can she really walk away from him a second time?

This was a poignant and sexy read about how tough it must be to keep a marriage together in the military - especially when all those tough guys think they shouldn't feel anything! And if they do, they sure as heck shouldn't share them with the women they love. Would sharing those feelings and experiences cause those women to see them in a different, negative light? How silly men can be . . .

Another good one by Fetzer.

A couple who's divorce is impending, Rick and Kate find themselves tossed together for 2 months. Can they talk through the problems that separated them?

Fetzer's ability to translate emotions on to the page is unparalleled. Her characters act like real people would, thinking what you would think and doing what you would do. Don't miss Fetzer's best works "Rebel Heart" and "Dangerous Waters".

I loved this book. Amy Fetzer did such a good job of portraying the mindset of the wounded warrior, plus she very deftly handles the fallout that comes to marriages and the pain to the wives of these men in the specialized services, in this case the Marines' Force Recon. Both Rick and Kate, the main characters, are delightful. Rick, as a wounded Marine, is like a wounded bear. Kate is a nurse detached to take care of his recovery. Oh yes, the sparks fly! I would recommend this book to anyone.

Great for Piano Beginners!

The John W. Schaum Piano series is an excellent way to introduce children to the piano. Geared to the early grade school level, A-The Red Book is a follow-up to Pre-A-The Green Book. All the piano books in this series feature colorful illustrations, easy-to-read notes, and simple hand positions. The book progresses from very simple melodies at the start to more complex "melody and chord" songs at the end. Children love to sing along as they play the notes. I have found this to be a great way to for younger kids to learn to read music and begin their study of the piano.

Excellent for kids and adults

I used the older version of this book when I was a child and it was excellent. Easy to read and understand. Perfect for learning to play the piano if you want to go at your own pace. I had a private instructor as well but the book was the key to my lessons. I have almost the entire collection but they are a bit out-dated so I plan to buy the new ones soon for my own review, and also so I can teach my kids to play when they are old enough. I loved the John W. Schaum series. Note: These books aren't really theory based so if you intend to teach yourself, you'll also need a book to really teach you the basics (Tip: I used the AB Guide to music theory by Eric Taylor, it's alittle difficult to find now though), once you master the theory, you'll be on your way to playing tons of songs. Fun fun fun!!!

A great series of learn-to-play books

I was very happy to be able to find the John W. Schaum Piano Course books. Many years ago, I was taught to play piano using these books and now I'm able to teach my children the same way. This book provides a very simply step-by-step approach to piano playing that is challenging but still easy enough for children to understand and to practice what they've learned on their own.

Excellent book, and very useful tips...

If you have ever considered designing, or creating a product - you must read this book. It has dozens and dozens of ideas - from nature and man made products / designs that can accomplish everthing - expanding, contracting, flexing, joining, containing...you name it.

Nature has a lot to teach us, and you will discover how its creatures use their intelligence to make things work (and adapt) over millenia. One simple example is how a bird uses its wings for multiple purposes - for ascending during flight, as brakes while coming to land on a branch, spreading them as a scare tactic to appear larger than it really is, shelter it's young, etc.

Then, you can let your creativity run loose - combining ideas to create designs which use more than one paradigm in the book. If you really get into it, you will find yourself creating some crazy things - ones that have never been done before, and have the potential to make a difference in the world!

Read, enjoy, invent, and go for it with some cool designs...

This book is very interesting collection of design paradigms that can be used for problem solving in several areas including product/Industrial design. What I can appreciate about the book is its perspective on seeing existing functions as possible design paradigms themselves. Otherwise I think it's a great reference for problem solving for form and function.

Design is everywhere

This book is an exciting exploration of universal principles (paradigms) of form and design. Warren Wake identifies the design fundamentals common to such diverse areas as architecture and insects, industrial design and weather patterns. The book is organized around big questions in design, like how two objects can be joined, and how an object can change size. Within each category or chapter, the author takes us through the many ingenious solutions to these fundamental problems, wherever the solutions may be. One moment we're looking at how an armadillo can roll into a ball, then we're seeing how this can be applied to metal construction to bend and change the form of rigid materials. We see the structure of a Swiss Army Knife and then how the principle can be applied to clothing design. The bottom-line message is that "Design is Everywhere," and this book is as good a guide to this view of the world as you'll find. It should be required reading for persons interested in industrial design or architecture, and should be interesting to anyone interested in how things work.

Archytas of Tarentum was a central figure in fourth-century Greek life and thought and the last great philosopher in the early Pythagorean tradition. Everything you want to know about Archytas

Aside from general ideas about change, matter, time, and infinity, the only mathematical material I can find in the fragments and testimonia of the Presocratics are (i) the paradoxes of Zeno (which are not even explicitly mathematical), (ii) Aristotle's attribution of squaring the circle to Antiphon and Bryson, (iii) a paradox of Democritus about cones, and (iv) the construction by Archytas of mean proportionals and his theorem about epimoric ratios. (In fact, Archytas was a contemporary of Plato, but either because he was a Pythagorean or because he was independent of Socrates he is usually counted as Presocratic.)

Huffman has meticulous commentary on the texts, both about their authenticity and their meaning. This book is not meant to be read cover to cover by anyone except a scholar of ancient music, mathematics, or Pythagoreanism, but it will be useful to other scholars as a reliable and thorough presentation of the work of Archytas.

The weightiest discovery of Archytas is the construction of two mean proportionals between given magnitudes, in A14. This amounts to constructing a cube root, which is used to double the cube (A15). Huffman has a large commentary on these testimonia (pages 342-400).

But Archytas's work on proportions probably was more important in ancient Greek mathematics than the particular problem of doubling the cube. In Fragment 2, Archytas defines the arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic means. A19 is the testimonium that states Archytas's proof that an epimoric ratio cannot be divided into equal parts. This amounts to the following: if A,B are positive integers such that B is a proper divisor of A-B, then the square root of A:B is irrational.

Aside from geometry, scholars of acoustics and optics should consult this book. Fragment 1 is about acoustics, and A25 is about vision.

This is first rate collection of original sayings (opinions) about Archytas, a great general and philosopher of the 4th century BCE. The editor, Carl Huffman, is also outstanding in his historical background and translations of the fragments surviving about Archytas. The book is timely, insightful and necessary. I recommend it highly.
