The biggest entry in the Routledge Language Family Series

THE INDO-ARYAN LANGUAGES, edited by George Cardona and Dhanesh Jain, is a typical installment of the Routledge Language Family Services, which seeks to give brief but insightful descriptions of as many languages in a family as possible. With this volume, Routledge has certainly outdone themselves, giving us over a thousand pages of linguistic goodness.

The first three chapters cover the language family in general. These are the General Introduction, "Sociolinguistics of the Indo-Aryan Languages" and "Writing Systems of the Indo-Aryan Languages". I am generally satisfied with the General Introduction's presentation of the debate over the Indo-European Urheimat and the influence from the substrate. However, I think it would have been better if George Cardona and Dhanesh Jain had laid out the devout Hindu line on this branch of linguistics, for they see Sanskrit as a perfect language of divine origin and the real parent of the Indo-European family, and they claim that Indo-European linguistics is a racist or colonialist science. That would better prepare readers for the nutjobs that discussions of these languages in public fora inevitably attract. Then there are three chapters on Middle Indo-Aryan. One covers Sanskrit, the second Asokan Prakrit and Pali, and the third Prakrits and Apabhramsa. The bulk of the book is dedicated to single-chapter descriptions of modern languages: Hindu, Urdu, Bangla, Asamiya, Oriya, Maithili, Magahi, Bhojpuri, Nepali, Panjabi, Sindhi, Gujarati, Marathi, Konkani, Sinhala, Dardic, and Kashmiri.

While I have training in Indo-European linguistics, my academic knowledge of this particularly family stops with Sanskrit, so I cannot give it much of a critical review. But for linguaphiles, this is sure to be an entertaining read and an exhaustive source of information.

Quite a detailed survey on Indo-Aryan.

This is a detailed survey, giving an overview of the phonology and grammar of most major Indo-Aryan languages. Though there is generally too little information on the history of the languages, like the sound changes or grammar changes. Likewise most chapters have no information about the dialects of the languages, beyond listing the dialects and sometimes saying what dialect is similar to what. There is unfortunately no chapter on the Dhivehi language, even though it is the official language of the Maldives, so it is an important language. Likewise the chapter on the various scripts of the Indo-Aryan languages has no mention of the Dhivehi script, which is a fascinating script, with both Arabic numerals and ancient numerals being adapted for use as consonants. There is also no chapter on the important Romany language (or it could be more accurately described as the Romany group of languages). In fact, Romany is hardly mentioned at all. There are two examples of Romany (spelled Romani by the author) in the chapter on Prakrits, saying that devoicing of murmured (meaning voiced aspirated) stops, like in the Paisaci Prakrit, occurred only in Romani and Dardic. Both examples are in Romani, and personally, as far as Dardic, I am aware of devoicing only in northern Kalasha. Other Dardic languages have either retained the voiced aspirates, or else have deaspirated them, sometimes resulting in a tone distinction. And even in Northern Kalasha, the devoicing is not general but sporadic, unlike Paisaci. The grammars of the various languages do not mention under what circumstances are subject pronouns not used, which is something I would want to know more about, as there are differences among the languages on where the pronouns are omitted.
But beyond these faults, the book is in general very informative and useful.

A Fresh New Look at Survival

It's about time I pick up a book that has more than a list of survival skills. In fact, this book doesn't make any attempt to teach you how to trap animals or construct log furniture in the wilderness. Instead, you learn how to idetify potential survival situations and avoid getting into them if possible. If you do, backcountry knowledge will be helpful but it will be even better if you know how to take care of the basics such as controling fear and focusing on keeping your body at a comfy 98.6 degrees. I absolutely loved this book. There is discussion of psychology, biology, and physiology, all in a basic easy to understand format. Lundin's writing style is as if he were there talking to you. One of my personal favorites of the book is the chapter on survival kits, complete with color photographs. I thought I had a pretty good kit but after reading this, I need to make a few changes. If you spend any time in the world, anywhere, I recommend this book. If you want to know how to build monster solar stills, trap wild animals, and spear fish, look elsewhere. This book rocks!

Reality at its best

Excellent book on survival. I am glad someone finally divides "SURVIVAL" from "Wilderness Living Skills" I would venture to say that most people that provide bad reviews of this book are looking for texts in Wilderness Living Skills. There are other books for that. I use 98.6 for a text book in our Search and Rescue Team training. In reality most victims succumb to hypothermia in survival situations other than trying to catch fish with a shoe string and a safety pin. It is reality at its best, presented in a humorous fashion.

It kept my ass alive!

Prior to embarking on a rugged solo day hike in AZ's Superstition Wilderness, I read this book cover to cover. (I'm a middle-aged, East Coast trail hiker who hasn't hiked recently, so survival was a major consideration.) My desert day hike turned into an overnight stay on a canyon ledge far from the trailhead. Thanks to Cody Lundin's book, I maintained a "party on" attitude, was fully prepared (both with equipment and mentally), and spent a fabulous night watching the stars. The right attitude is everything! Enjoyed the humor and common sense approach of his writing. His examples stick with you when you need them. Great tips on putting together a practical, personal survival kit that will work anywhere. There's now one in my pack and one in my car. Lots of useful information on how to overcome fear and keep your head.

How helpful is this book for boards? A second year medical student's perspective

I'm a second year medical school who is going to take the USMLE step 1 in June. I'll edit this post once I have actually taken it, but I will still give my opinion of the book now, so take it with a grain of salt.

This book covers every high yield area of behavioral science for the boards, including health care (Medicare vs Medicare, etc), principles of medical ethics, reportability of STDs, consent from minors, and the list is endless...

It even covers a few topics that you may have learned elsewhere, and can feel free to skip (e.g. information about neurotransmitters or psychopharmacology).

However, THE BEST part about this book is that it has questions at the end of every chapter (true to the BRS format). These questions definitely make it a BETTER OPTION than "High Yield Behavioral Science", which is also written by Dr. Fadem. I spent some time deciding between the two (and I even own them both), and this book is far superior in terms of helping you learn how to think and answer USMLE questions properly.

Lastly, is it worth buying this edition? Yes. It is in accordance with the new DSM V criteria, which will be on the boards! The old edition conformed to DSM IV. Furthermore, this new edition has added at least 15 pages of new material, and has added questions.

All in all, a solid and highly recommended purchase.

EDIT: I got my USMLE score report, and I received the highest possible score in neuro and behavioral science (marked with an *, just like in NBME practice exams). My ethics score was entirely due to this book.

EDIT: I am now an M4 in my psychiatric clerkship, and I have busted out this book yet again! If you like the BRS format then I think you'll agree that this is one of the best in the series (along with BRS pathology, physiology, and pediatrics).

Toastie Heaven

I am getting some very good ideas from this. I have a Salton Snackmaster/Sandwich maker that I haven't used in ages, as well as a pie iron, and Toastie Heaven will work with both of them.

The recipes look interesting, and there are a lot more recipes for a modest price than a New Zealand book that was double the price and really just a pamphlet.

There are a lot of nice tips as well, and although there isn't a recipe for Toastie Pizza, there is a recipe for a very small batch of pizza dough suitable for toasties. It's well-written and entertaining as well. I've only tried the egg sandwich toastie so far, and that worked well, although it was cooked a bit more than I wanted. I'm going to try a slightly different method and see how that works.

The recipes are British, not American so you have to know what things like aubergines, courgettes, and salad cream are. (eggplant, squash, and ?Miracle Whip?)
