This is a great book for beginners and more experienced in this technique, covering the topic and exploring the idea of pain relieve, body cleansing, and balancing and boosting your mind and body. If the book has snow on the cover, I'm probably going to read it. I don't ever get tired of these snowed in and trapped in close quarters together stories. Love the premise. But when one lead is pretty much a boring corpse for the opening 30% of a 110-page story... meh...

Basically, the star of the number one show on primetime wanders like a damn fool in the dangerously snowy mountains in the midst of a little getaway and an equally famous but reclusive writer takes her in. You know the rest.

I don't think these characters (or their relationship) were developed enough to justify a plausible attraction/love, and the build up and chemistry wasn't really here. The TV star isn't even particularly likable. Yes, I perked up with that first sex scene, but I can't praise much beyond that. The language was also just kinda Harlequin-pretentious painful (a whole lot of she was "dangerously beautiful and infinitely famous"). And seriously. "Her people" seemed like the damn mafia. Unless she's on Bates Motel or The Vampire Diaries... I say leave her in the damn blizzard. Who cares.

At least the dog wasn't exploited for cuteness.

Plot Turns, Odd Language, and Incessant Repetition - Oh My!

Ummm...I'm a little bit unsure on how to review this book. So I think I'll break it down into sections.

Section 1 - The Good
I actually enjoyed this novel in the beginning until about half-way through. The story was coming together nicely, the two main characters were well described and being given the proper time for effective development, and the brimming-under-the-surface attraction was palpable but not overwhelming. The struggles each character fought with were relatable, making it easy to follow and grow with the characters themselves as they delved deeper into their true feelings, both in themselves, as well as with others.

Section 2 - The Bad
Once the romance kicked in, my interest wavered and had difficulty keeping alive. I'm a big sucker for romance novels, especially of the lesbian persuasion, but this romance just didn't quite cut it. For one, the two characters were all of sudden in love. Like just one page after talking about dinner, suddenly the characters were all over each other, spewing out awkward phrases that I certainly don't use in the bedroom, and admitting to the other that they were the long lost love they had been searching for in the better part of a decade. I mean...I'm sorry, but shouldn't there be some sort of setup to romance? This wasn't meant to a bing, bang, done story - yet that's how it seemed to start out. Then suddenly, the next morning, each character was confessing their undying love to one another over tears and "I wish we could be together always"s. That and I felt that there was entirely too much repetition - in dialogue, in narrative, all around. There were also a few key phrases that I couldn't take seriously, such as "'This is what heaven looks like,' she said, sitting on her knees between Maggie's legs. 'So f***ing beautiful.'" I just...I don't even know.

Section 3 - The Verdict
I'm teetering between 2.5 stars and 2 stars. The 2.5 stars side of me is focusing on the first half of the novel, the part that I really enjoyed and didn't put down once (thank goodness for novella-length novels!). But the 2-star side of me just can't get passed the unbelievable plot turns, odd language at times, and the incessant repetition.

I've never read anything by Ronica Black before, but I've heard she is well liked among the LGBT population, and I will be sure to give her another try before deciding based on this one novel. I just wish this one kept the same pace in the beginning all the way to the end.

Sooo much potential wasted

I'd like to start by saying that I love a lot of Ronica Black books. In my opinion, she writes some of the greatest lesbian sex scenes out there. If you haven't read it already, pick up In Too Deep, as that's my favorite book she's written thus far. Now on to THIS book...

Snow Angel felt rushed on every level. The women go from nothing in common and barely speaking to each other, to declaring their undying love in 3 days time. There is constant talk about how Ellie is so controlled in her life and hates her life so much, but there isn't anything that really happens to back that up. Nothing was really fleshed out about these characters, so it felt much more like a story that belongs in a short story anthology.

I gave it three stars because I felt like this had so much more potential and still had these moment where you wanted the author to go more in depth, but in the end it just kept falling short. I just wish there was more of a build between the character...

Recommendation: Buy In Too Deep, not this one

a lovable, fun-filled adventure

Evangeline Mudd might possibly be the luckiest girl in the world. After all, how many kids have parents who encourage them to swing from the dining room chandeliers or eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with their feet?
Evangeline's parents, Merriweather and Magdelana Mudd, are not your typical mother and father. The Mudds are primatologists --- people who study apes and monkeys --- and their specialty is the golden-haired apes of the Ikkinasti Jungle. The Mudds are impressed by the fun-loving and harmonious way of life the golden-haired apes follow and decide to raise their own daughter Evangeline the same way --- with a few exceptions like playing the piano.
The Mudds are as happy as can be living in their New England bungalow until a phone call from Dr. Aphrodite Pikkaflee changes everything. Dr. Pikkaflee is the most famous primatologist in the world and she needs help. A new family of golden-haired apes was discovered in the Ikkinasti Jungle and the Mudds are needed to observe them for two weeks --- without Evangeline.
The Ikkinasti Jungle is a dangerous place to bring a nine-year-old like Evangeline. There are wormy things that crawl between your toes and enter directly into your bloodstream. There are mosquitoes the size of hummingbirds. And worst of all, there are giant spitting spiders whose spit can blind you!
Instead of exploring the Ikkinasti Jungle with her parents, Evangeline has to stay with her father's awful third cousin twice removed and his ex-ballerina wife. She can't wait until the two weeks are over. But then her parents mysteriously disappear, and it's up to Evangeline to travel to the Ikkinasti Jungle and find them.
David Elliot's EVANGELINE MUDD AND THE GOLDEN-HAIRED APES OF THE IKKINASTI JUNGLE is adventure-packed, funny and fast-paced. Elliot's conversational writing style will remind readers of authors like Lemony Snicket and Roald Dahl. Andrea Wesson's black-and-white illustrations throughout the book also compliment the fun-filled flavor. Readers will fall in love with the courageous heroine Evangeline. Will we be seeing her in a sequel? I hope so!

For kids moving on up from chapter reading to novels

Evangeline Mudd has enjoyed an unusual childhood, from learning to swing from rafters to eating sandwiches with her feet: much like the classic Pippi Longstocking, her unusual childhood leads to an unusual independence and resourcefulness early in life. When Evangeline's parents disappear while on a research trip, it's up to Evangeline to travel to the Ikkinasti Jungle and find them herself. Evangeline Mudd And The Golden-Haired Apes Of The Ikkinasti Jungle is not a chapter book, at 196 pages, but still most accessible to kids moving on up from chapter reading to full-fledged novels.

Evangeline Mudd, what a read!

Evangeline Mudd starts her life differently than most do. Her parents, Dr. Merriweather and Dr. Magdalena want to raise Evangline in a way most peculiar, like the golden-haired apes of the Ikkinasti Jungle.

Dr. Merriweather and Dr. Magdalena are some of the most well-respected primatologists in the field, therefore it is no wonder they are asked to go on an expedition to study more on the golden-hairs of the Ikkinasti Jungle. Evangeline cannot wait, until of course she finds out she can't go with them. It is at this point that this unique story takes several unexpected twists.

Evangeline is forced to stay with her third cousin, (twice removed), Melvin and his horrible wife India Terpsichore, but only for two weeks. However, two weeks turns into three, then four and soon it is finally discovered that Evangeline's parents must have run into trouble in the jungle.

Will Evangeline find her parents? Must she go alone into the Ikkinasti Jungle where spitting spiders abound? It is possible, but not without the help of none other than Dr. Aphrodite Pickaflee and a few other characters.

This book is filled with rich vocabulary and a fast-paced storyline. The variety of characters and different situations Evangeline finds herself in will keep you laughing until the end. The imagination in this story is superb! It is a must read!

About the Author

Alex Martelli spent 8 years with IBM Research, winning three Outstanding Technical Achievement Awards. He then spent 13 as a Senior Software Consultant at think3 inc, developing libraries, network protocols, GUI engines, event frameworks, and web access frontends. He has also taught programming languages, development methods, and numerical computing at Ferrara University and other venues. He's a C++ MVP for Brainbench, and a member of the Python Software Foundation. He currently works for AB Strakt, a Python-centered software house in Gteborg, Sweden, mostly by telecommuting from his home in Bologna, Italy. Alex's proudest achievement is the articles that appeared in Bridge World (January/February 2000), which were hailed as giant steps towards solving issues that had haunted contract bridge theoreticians for decades.

David Ascher is the lead for Python projects at ActiveState, including Komodo, ActiveState's integrated development environment written mostly in Python. David has taught courses about Python to corporations, in universities, and at conferences. He also organized the Python track at the 1999 and 2000 O'Reilly Open Source Conventions, and was the program chair for the 10th International Python Conference. In addition, he co-wrote Learning Python (both editions) and serves as a director of the Python Software Foundation. David holds a B.S. in physics and a Ph.D. in cognitive science, both from Brown University.

Cookbook every Pythoner should have

This book is based on ActiveState on-line library of python recipes which were selected and edited by two well known experts, industry veteran Alex Martelli and David Ascher, with the help from other Python experts.
Recipes are organized in seventeen chapters. Chapters begin with short introduction on the topic covered, and is well worth the reading alone (even if you're primarily interested on a specific recipe take the time and read the introduction text). Each recipe is comprised of four sections: Problem definition -> Solution (code) -> Discussion -> Pointers to other relevant recipes or material.
No matter how proficient you're at coding in Python you'll certainly found some useful tips, new approaches or coding techniques. Usually technical books have strong and weak parts which I point out in my reviews, this one is different. As someone before me stated, this book is all meat and no fat. What else do you want from your diet?

Superb collection of useful snippets

This book is a superbly edited collection of recipes that originally appeared online containing corrections and updates to the programs, much added discussion, many additional recipes, and fourteen extended chapter introductions. Each snippet is first briefly introduced, then completely and clearly discussed at length. The explanations are easy for beginners to understand, without being in the least condescending, while offering a huge feast for more experienced programmers.
This book has garnered rave reviews on comp.lang.python, the internet newsgroup devoted to Python. Some examples:
"The book is uniformly fantastic, congratulations to the authors!"
"I should note that this is not much like a usual Cookbook, which offers quick "do things this way" recipes to follow, almost blindly. Instead it offers deep discussions of various approaches and uses state-of-the-art techniques (e.g., list comprehensions) that may not be at all obvious to newcomers."
"I would recommend something like Learning Python as a first book. But then Python Cookbook is the second book to get, or the first for those who have been with the language a while."

Python Cookbook

This book nicely complements "Learning Python" by giving the reader a wide exposure to how Python can be used to solve common problems. The text is more than a list of recipes. A discussion section follows each code snippet. This is useful since the code is actually explained as opposed to simply being listed. The book is well laid out and has a decent amount of white space in the margins for notes. A more exhaustive index would have made finding a particular example easier, although having said that, the Table of Contents is well laid out. I highly recommend "Python Cookbook" not only as a book to show how specific problems can be solved using Python, but as showing alternative approach.
