Excellent reference

I had some trepidations about buying this book, primarily because so many "Encyclopedia" works tend to be extremely limited in scope. Not so with this volume. While no book of this nature can be truly comprehensive, this book offers an extremely broad range of subjects, with decent detail and interesting illustrations throughout. More important, however, is the completeness of the author's annotations; by following the annotations at the end of each entry, I have had an excellent starting point with which to continue my research on any subject that I found intriguing enough to follow up on.

I bought this work as an artist, looking for symbolism and information that I could incorporate into my work (which is largely religious in nature). I also study the paranormal, and much of the content of this book has been illuminating to those studies, as well. If you are looking for a quick, down-and-dirty reference to a broad range of demonic subjects, this book is a solid purchase.

Pretty good though not what i was looking for.

I'm not sure who i bought this from but i got it quickly and it was in great shape, so kudos to them for that. The book itself is a pretty good buy but not for someone just starting out on the topic of demonology as I am. I'd gather that it is better for someone who has studied demonology for a while, and when they get stuck trying to remember how many Aerial Spirits of Solomon there were, or whether Beelzebub looked like a fly or a spider, then this book is a good place to jog the memory. But for someone starting out, you won't get a clear coherent story. You'll start reading at A, encounter your first of Solomon's many demons, and then you'll flip to the section on Solomon. You'll be intrigued and find the whole thing interesting but you'll want more than is available.

From what I've been reading, a lot of the information on a lot of the demons is limited even in the original texts in which they appeared. But still, it's an encyclopedia, so perhaps much of the information was just omitted. If you're looking for a good historical analysis of the origin of a demon, or how a "demon" evolved after its first appearance in the Old Testament, then you should look elsewhere.

The book does have good "further reading" notes at the end of each section. The suggested books are likely the ones you'd want to read first. I'm eager to learn more about the history of the origins of these demons, how their stories evolved and their legends came to be throughout history. If that's what you're looking for, do a little more research and skip this one. But if you're just looking for a demonic freak show of sorts, or you're trying to come up with some baby names that'll piss off your religious parents, this is book is for you.

Waste of money, pretty much just a plagiarized book.

Not very extensive, Author spends some 50-60 pages on a demon possessed nun case that was a hoax. About 30 percent of the book is the demons mentioned in Solomanic books. Things that deserve a full page get two lines, things that deserve 2 lines get 50 pages. Some of the listings appear to be no name people whom are friends with the author. There are many images in the book, many of them famous images, but most are listed as coming from the "Author's collection", instead of listing where they really came from. Way too much of the authors opinion all throughout the book, she is obviously a satanic/witchcraft apologist. This is supposed to be an encyclopedia, a lot of it is the author's ignorant opinions. Waste of $17, you can google any of the terms listed and gain much more information.

I agree completely

This short excerpt is just what people need to start wrapping their minds around simplifying and focusing on what really matters in life: relationships, pursuing your true dreams and happiness. I began my decluttering journey during my childhood and more seriously during my pregnancy with my 3rd child. My kids are happiest when they don't have copious amounts of toys and tv and iPads etc. The TV left the house years ago, and although we thought it was challenging at first, the family time had increased and we no longer throw our life away watching garbage. The kids tell people that TV rots your brain. Lol. Much joy and happiness as well as better direction has come from the decluttering/purging/simplifying. I feel like this has always been what I've wanted and it's nice to see it coming to the forefront. More stuff doesn't equate to your level of fulfillment and contentment.

There are books on minimalism and there are some on decluttering. Many miss the reasons why you are doing this and the implementation of a new mindset. This is one of the better and truly helpful for lasting achievements if you really work with it. Although the book is relatively short the main clutter hot spots like the kitchen, bathroom, sleeping room etc are tackled. You don't need to aim for minimalism to gain something from this book, but it just makes sense. Unless you are a hardcore hoarder - for whom this book is not - you can achieve much in the two weeks.

One of the very best!

There is a truly vast quantity of books, articles, and texts available on Alexander, and I have read as many as possible. Without a shadow of doubt I can recommend Lane Fox's effort as the best I have yet encountered (for Alexander buffs I include in that list of inferiors Badian, Tarn, Wilcken, Schackermeyr, Green - both of them - Hammond, Dodge, Engels, Bosworth, Hamilton, and Griffith to name but a few). Robin Lane Fox is rightly sceptical of sentimentality when dealing with his subject. Nor does he come to Alexander with his mind already inflexible and set on the King's more cotroversial aspects - a practice deplorably monotonous within the field. On ethical issues he keeps in mind the moral tone of the day - a habit that many modern historians would do well to engage in. He is rigorous in the extreme in his use of sources; he is analytical without being academic to the point of tediousness; and he deals with Alexander as a broad and complex human being - that is to say that he deals with the Macedonian as a ruler, a general, a lover, a patron of the arts, a drinker, a hunter, a reader of literature, a quester after glory, a figure of charisma, and also as a man of complexity and failings. It is in this last respect, his varied view of the Alexander, that he succeeds the most, for many of his biographers tend to concentrate on one aspect to the detriment of all others and consequently fail to give a rounded picture of the King. Lane Fox realises that oversimplifying the personalities of long dead figures does more to cloud them than to clarify them. For this he is to be commended highly. His style is lucid and often pithy. If at times you are lulled into thinking that you are reading a novel, don't be fooled; you are constantly bombarded with scrupulously researched information that is presented in the most easy going style. He gives excellent notes and a comprehensive bibliography at the back of the book for those who are interested in the finer details of source and analysis - some 60 pages of miniscule print. I gather that some have labelled this a 'boy's own account' of the ruler. That is quite simply not the case. It is far more competent AND FACTUALLY CORRECT than most of the more academic texts currently available. If you haven't read this one you simply don't know Alexander. P.S. - If you are coming to Alexander on foot of seeing or reading the recent Michael Woods effort (In the footsteps of A the G), disregard everything you heard. The BBC series was shallow, journalistic in the worst possible way, and on more occasions than one would like to believe was factually incorrect. Fox is by far the better historian. I reiterate, this is a must.

Superb Writing

This is an extraordinary history. Anyone expecting a conventional biography will be disappointed, since the biased and fragmentary nature of the primary sources makes modern biographical treatment for Alexander impossible, even more so than for other ancient heroes. However, one thing about the peripatetic conqueror that seems to be known with some certainty is the itinerary that defined his brief life. Starting from this, Mr. Lane Fox applies his own intimate knowledge of the middle and near-eastern landscape to create a book which, at its most basic, reads like a highly literate travelogue. This is all backdrop, though, for a kind of detective story as the author picks apart the tantalizing fragments of information and disinformation that, once boiled down, reveal for us Alexander's character. The bold military prodigy is clearly apparent here, but that's the standard textbook part of the story. Rounding out the picture, we see him as the cosmopolitan diplomat, beloved egalitarian leader-of-men, bisexual libertine, respectful supplicant to his gods, forgiving victor, gallant defender of women, ostentatious potentate, superstitious fool, charismatic orator, fearless in-the-trenches combat commander, wily tactician, boyish adventurer, child-like animal lover, sophisticated Greek intellectual, reckless gambler, visionary strategist, loyal and generous friend, bloody mass killer, and drunken lout. And the truly remarkable thing about the history is that all these persona somehow hang together, creating a believable portrait that makes it clear why Alexander has fascinated politicians, soldiers and scholars for twenty-three centuries. Stylistically, this book is dense and will deter casual readers. However, some patience through the early pages gives enough time to get into the exotic poetry of place names and the flow of the story. The turgid logic of the character study takes over from there, and the case unfolds majestically. This is a brilliant historian at work and I highly recommend the book.

The Most Engaging Of The Alexander Biographies.

There is no shortage of books on Alexander The Great, but Robin Lane Fox supercedes them all with this grand, highly detailed and impressive work that manages to entertain, educate and excite the reader about the subject. One of the benefits of Fox's "Alexander The Great" is that he decides to do away with boring, repetitive structures and decides to use both the evidence but basic human experience to tell the tale of one of history's most fascinating kings. History, Fox explains, is motivated much by human emotion, passionate feeling aside from the usual politics. This gives his book a natural dramatic touch, it doesn't have the feel of a fictitious novel, but of a biography that really tries to explore Alexander and those around him as people. One of the disappointments in Paul Cartledge's recent biography is that he relies strictly on tablets and scrolls, and dismisses the human areas, creating characters that are cardboard cut-outs. To Cartledge everything is politics, all true relationships homosexual and any other intercourse purely done for politics' sake. Fox here gives us the portrait of a man driven by a need to discover, to reach the heights of Achilles, but also a haunted man, especially by his mother Olympias. The book is also well-detailed in the culture of the times and in his descriptions of landscapes and even home interiors, Fox manages to completely transport the reader to another time and place. Each chapter is richly detailed with not only the story of Alexander, but his influence on world history and leaders like Julius Caesar and Napoleon. We get fascinating myths, comments, tales of conspiracy and murder and one of the great interchanges of culture ever. Fox educates us about customs and rituals, beliefs and battle tactics in a work of enormous scope. It is an important thing to study the past to better understand the present. Once again we are in a time when the west is going into the east, the story of Alexander has never been more relevant. "Alexander The Great" is epic and exciting and should be sought out by anyone currently engaged in reading world history.

The psychotherapist whose books (including the novel The Best Little Girl in the World) have illuminated the nature and treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anorexia nervosa and bulimia now shines the spotlight on another misunderstood behavioral disorder: self-mutilation. Levenkron begins by advising desensitization to the disturbing wounds, scars and blood-letting patients inflict upon themselves, redirecting focus toward the underlying issues. He likens cutting to OCD in that it is a compulsive act meant to relieve unbearable emotional pain, and to eating disorders in that it is a method of seizing control. Like anorexics, most cutters are girls, unable to express anger toward others, instead turning it against themselves. Levenkron is careful to explain that cutting is not the same as body piercing or tattooing, which reflect "adolescent trendiness," and that cutters are not suicidal, their wounds life-threatening only rarely and accidentally. Cutting is done secretly, "usually in a trancelike state," and "the act of creating pain... or drawing blood, is in itself the goal." Cutters then develop an "addiction" to this method of exchanging physical pain for emotional pain. With many examples from his practice, Levenkron provides clear and comprehensive information on the causes and effective treatments of this mysterious disorder, specific advice for therapists and an encouraging sense of hope for patients and their families.

Self-mutilation, most commonly by cutting or burning, frequently begins in adolescence and may continue for a lifetime if the behavior is left untreated. It can cause permanent scarring, blood loss, infection (including human immunodeficiency virus infection), and even death. It is also psychologically dangerous.

Self-mutilation can be visually shocking -- imagine a crosshatching of ugly red gashes on an adolescent's arms and legs -- and eerily silent, a dramatic symbol that takes the place of words. It has the power to move not only psychiatrists and other mental health workers, but also the members of the emergency room staff, who bind and stitch the wounds of "cutters" and assess the likelihood that such persons will commit suicide; plastic surgeons, who are asked to remove the scars but often find their questions unanswered about how the wounds that caused them occurred; and youth workers in all areas -- hospitals, schools, and juvenile and residential facilities -- who may be struggling with more than one child who cuts, often in recognition of and in competition with each other.

Levenkron understands the need for sharing basic information about this taboo subject as well as strategies for treatment. As a therapist who has worked with this problem for more than 20 years, he has much to offer. Levenkron is also a gifted writer who, with this book, adds to the growing genre of creative nonfiction in which personal narratives and many of the other devices used in fiction attract the reader's attention, and engrossing stories provide information about a complex subject in a medical or scientific field. Stories are one of the oldest means by which we pass along information. I believe that today, physicians are hungry for stories. Most of our journals are filled with extensive research studies, and the case reports -- our stories -- are rapidly disappearing.

Levenkron fills his book with stories. The lives of Kessa, Annika, and Dina, for example, are described in spellbinding detail. I first heard about the book from two of my adolescent patients, one a girl who regularly cuts her arms and another who mostly restricts her food intake but will cut herself occasionally. These patients liked the book but had some questions about it. They felt that the lives and problems of the people Levenkron describes paralleled their own and validated their struggles with cutting. Moreover, they grasped Levenkron's well-articulated and repeated message that getting better requires replacing cutting with a trusting attachment to an understanding person.

They were puzzled, however, by some of his comments about medications, which he suggests are merely agents to stabilize hereditary chemical problems. My patients, both of whom had used medications that resulted in less frequent cutting, understood that their problems were a complex mix of many factors and that medication, individual therapy, and family therapy were all working together to help them get better. They knew that their depression was more than a biochemical imbalance and that their cutting behavior was more than a problem with attachment.

I liked much about this book. The writing is strong, and Levenkron addresses many aspects of cutting that heretofore have been taboo and does not look away. He has a clear message for those who cut -- in order to get better, you have to develop a trusting attachment to another person -- and repeats it over and over again, interspersing supporting comments, and so, as in many self-help books, seems to say to the reader, "You, too, can do this."

What troubles me is that this book is not written solely for people struggling with this problem, but also for a wider audience -- health professionals, therapists, friends, and parents -- and for these readers its main goal is to define good treatment of self-mutilating behavior. Here there are problems, and Levenkron's perspective is limited. From my own 20 years of experience with such patients and their families, I know that developing a trusting relationship with a qualified, knowledgeable person is an important part of the work. But there are other aspects of treatment to consider: the way medication can work with therapy to decrease symptoms, the way various life stresses can aggravate the condition, and the roles of individual, family, group, and cognitive therapies. The treatment of self-mutilation is complex, as are the factors that contribute to the behavior and the coexisting disorders and symptoms that present with the behavior. And for people who cut, as for anyone, not all depression merely reflects a hereditary chemical imbalance.

As a psychiatrist, I am disinclined to become involved in turf wars with psychologists and other mental health professionals. It has often been my experience that psychologists can describe and capture what psychiatry is and what it does better than psychiatrists can. But Levenkron's perspective seems biased. When he tells the story of the family of a girl who is referred to a psychiatrist because the previous therapist is overwhelmed by the serious nature of the girl's behavior, he says that the referral leaves both the parents and the child feeling "rejected, lost, and hopeless about obtaining successful treatment." Levenkron goes on to note that patients who are referred to psychiatrists feel that their problems are overwhelming to their initial therapists and too severe.

Yet Levenkron makes no recommendations for how to work with such fear. He does not suggest, for example, that a psychiatrist and therapist could work collaboratively on a case or that a patient could be referred to a psychiatrist and not be led to feel that his or her situation was hopeless. Instead, he reinforces the viewpoint that an adolescent will see himself or herself as a "psychiatric freak" if such a referral is made. Certainly not all patients who mutilate themselves need to see a psychiatrist, but psychiatrists are uniquely trained to work with patients with severe problems in which psychological, biologic, and social issues play a part.

I must recommend this book with caution. It is well written and engaging, and it educates the reader about a subject on which too little has been written. However, it does not provide a fully integrated perspective on treating self-mutilation, nor does it describe the many problems that frequently accompany this behavior.

Dated and Too Situationally Specific

The book is well-written and approaches this difficult subject matter with respect and dignity. There are plenty of case examples, including conversations, to give an idea of some of the mindsets of patients who self injure.

However, reading this book nearly 20 years after its publication and having experience in the mental health community it is apparent that a lot of progress has been made in understanding the subject of cutting and self-harm since the book was written. The case examples tend to be on the extreme end of the spectrum; I didn't feel the book covered a wide enough spectrum of "levels of mental health" in clients who self injure. In particular I noted an obvious lack of examples of adults who self-injure. The book focuses on teens and older children coming from rather intense backgrounds, which felt overly specific and seemed to ignore (or present a total ignorance of) those who self-injure as a whole as we are aware of this issue today.

While the author attempts to break down the taboo barriers in the discussion of self-harm and cutting, (and admittedly, there are still many in the mental health community who struggle to adequately support or help those who self-injure) the subject almost comes off as sensational due to its focus on the extreme.

There is still useful and well-grounded information in this book. As I said, the author led the charge at the time in understanding self-injury and presenting it as a treatable issue. Just keep in mind that in comparison to what we know now in the present day, the information comes off as a bit narrowly focused.

Better suited for friends for female cutters and friends or families of cutters.

I have to agree with some of the other reviews, if you're a male cutter you're probably not going to get much value out of this book.
Personally I think this book would be ideal for the loved one or family member of a cutter trying to develop some understanding of what's going on.

That said I honestly just found most of this book to miss the mark for me. The psychology described in the book would probably describe 70% of cutters but absolutely missed the mark with me. I was really hoping to find some answers or insights to this book but frankly I found it tiresome and tedious to read through. I can't fault the book for being bad or misinformation, but I can't say that I did not enjoy this book and did not have a positive experience with it.

Direct and To-The Point with Compassion

This book is very direct and to-the-point while being compassionate and non-judgmental - a perspective that I very much appreciate. The narratives that describe actual people who have experienced the practice of cutting are very helpful. I found the probable causes and explanations for self-cutting useful and applicable. This book explores not just the person who is experiencing the self-cutting, but the social and family dynamics as well. Be prepared to self-reflect if you are a family member who is close to someone who is experiencing self-cutting. I highly recommend this book for family members and therapists alike.
