JoEllen Patterson, PhD, is Professor of Marital and Family Therapy at the University of San Diego and Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego.

 

Lee Williams, PhD, is Professor of Marital and Family Therapy at the University of San Diego and does couple therapy with veterans at the VA San Diego Medical Center.

 

Todd M. Edwards, PhD, is Associate Professor and Director of the Marital and Family Therapy Program at the University of San Diego and Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego.

 

Larry Chamow, PhD, is Clinical Professor of Marital and Family Therapy at the University of San Diego and is in full-time private practice at the Pacific Family Institute in Carlsbad, California.

Pianos Inside Out

An incredibly complete and well-presented guide to piano history and technology. As a Registered Piano Technician with forty years of experience in the field, I have found in just the first couple of hours of reading that this book answered a lot of questions I still had and has verified many procedures and practices that I have had to figure out on my own, or seek help from others. It is well-researched and documented and the only slight improvement I can think of would be to increase some of the type size and the size of some of the illustrations. The vast majority of the book is quite readable, even with my 79-year-old eyes, but I find myself reaching for a magnifying glass now and then to better see the details in some of the pictures. This work is a monumental achievement just in sheer volume of information, but it is also well-organized and easily accessed with carefully arranged cross-references. This book should be in the hands of any and every person who is, or aspires to be, in the field of piano tuning and repair. It's worth every dollar of the price.

For those who thought Reblitz was useful "Pianos Inside Out" is an incredible, detailed, and meticulous work covering all facets of piano servicing. A great deal of updated information, finessed techniques, and other useful sources and resources for components, tools, and research.

As comprehensive a book on the subject as you'd ever find

As indicated by previous posters, this is indeed a a most comprehensive book on the subject. The chapter alone on the geometry of the action was itself something of a thorough dissertation on the subject. And even though I'm in my fortieth year as a piano tech, I'm still learning new things, new tricks. Case in point........I seldom lacquer voice hammers but his method for doing(where the action is placed perpendicular to the ground) is something I'll have to try the next time that occasion arises. And speaking of voicing. He didn't mention anything about electric voicing, a technique I've used for several years since a close colleague turned me on to it. It is especially effective for very hard hammers because with the needles rotating as fast as they do, they manage to penetrate the felt more effortlessly than the traditional "stabbing" technique we use(which means naturally less stress and strain on the forearm).

Python language for physicists

This book teaches Python with examples from physics. I think it is the only python book specifically targeted to physics majors and physicists. The author actually makes available for free a big part the book, but if you need all of it, the best thing is to just purchase it.

This book is very well written and helpful. There are many examples throughout the book, and explanations are complete yet concise. The progression through topics is intuitive. It is very helpful that the author has a set of online supplemental materials available (eg sample code). Concepts are taught so that they can be applied to other programming languages with ease.

Great on Physics, light on Python

I absolutely love the physics in this book and it does a great job presenting a lot of the python concepts you will need to do amazing things. My only gripe is that it completely blows off object oriented principles and their benefits which is a crime. You will want to learn more about OO for larger scale and maintainable applications as you do more. Aside from that it is very well written and a pleasure to read and work with.

Not much is known about Elaine Hamilton other than she wrote a series of mysteries in the 1930's featuring Inspector Reynolds of Scotland Yard. Dark Derring-Do

Elaine Hamilton's Inspector Reynolds is always good fun, if you enjoy the complicated plots and sometimes overly exotic characters characteristic of the period. Reynolds himself is a bit of a plod, but the villains are grotesque and there is always a good girl who has gotten herself into deep waters but will be saved by a romance. Fun, escapist reading for those who enjoy even the second tier mysteries of the Golden Age.

Very helpful as well as entertaining

This is an excellent book on writing. It should be mandatory reading for everyone who will ever try to communicate ideas to others. It is a good guide for business and everyday writing. Unfortunately, these skills have been taken for granted, or even ignored, until we are required to prepare a formal communication. The author clearly demonstrates why all should become better writers. She shows how we all do even more writing in the age of electronic communication and social media. Her writing tips are immediately useful and entertainingly presented. I highly recommend this book.

What is the appropriate architecture for modern times? Should it free itself from the shackles of earlier forms? Or should the received wisdom of the past be incorporated into new buildings? Architects and critics have debated these questions for over a century. Rather than validate a particular ideology, Dennis Doordan's thoughtful, wide-ranging survey follows the progression of modern architecture as a manifestation of this debate.

Histories of modern architecture are often conceived as the struggle, triumph, and inevitable exhaustion of high modernism in the United States, Western Europe, and Scandinavia. The reader of Twentieth-Century Architecture will encounter instead a more global and open approach that considers what was possible, desirable, and appropriate during a volatile era of unprecedented opportunities.

There are three parts: Confronting Modernity, 1900-1940; Modernist Hegemony, 1940-1965; and An Era of Pluralism, 1965-2000. Covering developments in the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, Dennis Doordan discusses the form, function, materials, and technologies of domestic and recreational spaces, workplaces, and buildings that reflect the chosen image of the state, and he also provides some treatment of city planning.

About the Author

Dennis P. Doordan is Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana. He is the author of Building Modern Italy: Italian Architecture, 1914-1936 (Princeton Architectural Press, 1988), as well as numerous articles. He is the editor of Design History: An Anthology (MIT Press, 1996) and coeditor of Design Issues, a leading international journal devoted to the history, theory, and criticism of design.

Books belong in the hands of readers and every author imagines who his or her readers may be. This book is an introductory survey of twentieth-century architecture for students engaged in the study of the subject and its relationship to the social, cultural, and political life of the period. It is the author's hope that this text will provoke students to pursue the subject further. If the book starts the reader on a quest to learn more about the subject and draws him or her ever deeper into the issues, it will have accomplished its principal goal.

A second, equally important group of readers will pick up this book not because they are enrolled in a formal educational program but because they are motivated by curiosity. We spend our lives surrounded by buildings and for most of us those of the twentieth century constitute the largest portion of the architecture encountered on a daily basis. Therefore, it is only natural to wonder about something as pervasive, important, and engaging as architecture. What accounts for its diversity in the twentieth century? What stories, ideals, hopes, and fears were architects trying to convey to their peers and to posterity? The author hopes the general reader will find his or her curiosity rewarded and consequently an appreciation of the world around them enhanced.

This book is divided into three main sections. The first part, "Confronting Modernity," surveys four discrete domains of professional design activity in the period 1900-1940: urban architecture, domestic architecture, the architecture of industry and transportation, and political architecture. This period is described as one of intense debate among architects advocating different approaches such as classicism, modernism, organicism, and craft-based design. The second part, "Modernist Hegemony," reviews developments during the period 1940-1965. During these years, the terms of the debate concerning the character of an appropriate architecture were dramatically revised—and narrowed. It is still a period marked by lively discussion, but the discourse is now predicated almost entirely in terms of modernism and modernist conceptions of appropriate models and design strategies. The third part, "An Era of Pluralism," covers the years 1965-2000. A new consciousness of environmental issues, new scientific paradigms, and critical theories of knowledge called into question the certainties of modernism. This part reviews the spectrum of design movements—postmodernism, deconstructivism, new classicism, "green" architecture, and even a reinvigorated modernism—characteristic of the last decades of the twentieth century.

Although writing is often a solitary occupation, no author of an illustrated history book such as this truly works alone.
