Since the late 1970s, the Berlin-based contemporary artist Isa Genzken (b. 1948) has produced a body of work that is remarkable for its formal and material inventiveness. In her sculptural practice, Genzken has developed an expanded material repertoire that includes plaster, concrete, epoxy resin, and mass-produced objects that range from action figures to discarded pizza boxes. Her heterogeneous assemblages, a New York Times critic observes, are "brash, improvisational, full of searing color and attitude." Genzken, the recent subject of a major retrospective at MoMA, offers a highly original interpretation of modernist, avant-garde, and postminimalist practices even as she engages pressing sociopolitics and economic issues of the present.

These illustrated essays address the full span of Genzken's work, from the elegant floor sculptures with which she began her career to the assemblages, bursting with color and bristling with bric-a-brac, that she has produced since the beginning of the millennium. The texts, by writers including Yve-Alain Bois, Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, and the artist herself, consider her formation in the West German milieu; her critique of conventions of architecture, reconstruction, and memorialization; her sympathy with mass culture; and her ongoing interrogation of public and private spheres. Two texts appear in English for the first time, including a quasi-autobiographical screenplay written by Genzken in 1993.

In The Famerfield Mission, Fiona Vernal recounts the history of an African Christian community on South Africa's troubled Eastern Cape frontier. Forged in the secular world of war, violence, and colonial dispossession and subjected to grand evangelical aspirations and social engineering, Farmerfield's heterogeneous mix of former slaves and displaced Africans from polities beyond the borders of the Cape Colony entered the powerful ideological arena of anti-slavery humanitarianism and evangelicalism. As a farm, an African residential site amid a white community, and a Christian mission on a violent frontier, Farmerfield was at once a space, a place, and an idea that Africans, missionaries, whites, and colonial authorities competed to mold according to their own visions.

Founded in 1838 and destroyed by the apartheid government in 1962, Farmerfield's residents struggled over the meaning and content of a civilized, Christianized lifestyle, deploying a range of tactics from negotiation and dissimulation to deference and defiance. In the process, they vernacularized Christianity, endured the ravages of colonialism and apartheid, used their historical connections to the Methodist Church and South Africa's land reform legislation to regain land, and launched the Farmerfield experiment anew, amid new debates about the meaning of post-apartheid land access and citizenship. Farmerfield's propitious rise, protracted, frustrating decline and fledgling reincarnation reflect epochal chapters in South Africa's colonial, apartheid, and post-apartheid history as Africans attempted to define the terms of their cultural autonomy and economic independence.

Wonderful resource

This is the book we go to first when creating a new crystalline glaze. After about a year of experimentation, we are consistently producing beautiful crystals and this book is one of the main reasons.

Thorough, Systematic, Beautiful!

Yes, this book is full of beautiful pictures to drool over. After an hour or so of taking in the photos, you may begin to notice there's words and stuff around the photos. Words about the importance of maintaining consistent clay body chemistry when fine-tuning your glaze recipes and firing programs, how to protect your kiln from the caustic "runny" glazes that will ooze right off the bottom of the work, and so forth.

What particularly impressed me as I paid more attention to the words was the author's emphasis on systematic experimentation. There are a lot of variables that affect the formation of zinc oxide crystals, or even whether you'll get any crystal formation at all. So, from the very start you're going to have to run a series of controlled tests to find the "sweet spot" for crystal formation in your kiln, on your particular clay body chemistry, for a particular glaze recipe and firing program. Once you've dialed that in, you can tweak individual parts of the system (glaze formulation, glaze application and thickness, firing program) to alter your baseline crystal glaze. The authors provide detailed recipes and firing programs as well as notes on directions the reader can explore through further experimentation to develop your own unique signature glazes.

Excellent Starting Point

Price and Price contribute to the literature by providing the reader with needed advice on how to mix glazes, and schedules to fire them with. In fact, the best part of the book is providing the reader with numerous firing schedules and explaining how to use them. I also like their discussion on how to incorporate gum into the glaze solution so that the glaze does not craze. At the same time, I was dissatisfied when I realized that I would not be able to replicate their glazes because most of the glazes that are featured in the book in their illustrations are for cone 11, a temperature that my kiln does not reach. Perhaps because of this, their most beautiful glazes (nickel blue on yellow) did not work in my kiln. That was a disappointment, but I have used recipes from other books with Price and Price's firing schedules and advice. For this reason, I find that the book does not stand alone but must be used with Creber, Shimbo, and other authors.

About the Author

Jane Roberts (May 8, 1929 – September 5, 1984) grew up in Saratoga Springs, New York where she attended Skidmore College. Jane was a prolific writer in a variety of genres including poetry, short stories, children’s literature, fiction, and non-fiction. Her international bestselling non-fiction books include Seth Speaks, The Nature of Personal Reality, The Nature of the Psyche, and The Individual and the Nature of Mass Events. Her enormously popular novels include The Education of Oversoul Seven, The Further Education of Oversoul Seven, and Oversoul Seven and the Museum of Time (now published as The Oversoul Seven Trilogy). Yale University Library maintains a collection of Jane’s writings, journals, poetry, and audio and video recordings that were donated after her death by her husband, Robert F. Butts.

Roberts was considered one of the most important psychics of the twentieth century.

John Gallant lives today in Prince Edward Island, where the stories in this book take place. Seth was born in 1962 in a rural Ontario town. Seth lives in Guelph, Ontario with five cats, a gigantic collection of vintage records, comic books, and 20th century Canadiana, and his very patient wife. He regularly contributes illustrations to" The New Yorker "and" The National Post "and recently provided the entire album artwork for Sony records singer-songwriter, Aimee Mann.

Brain food for the advanced Seth reader

In this book (two volumes) Seth adds depth to some of the concepts introduced in Seth Speaks (Reincarnation, Probabilities) and adds new flavours (Counterparts, Families of Consciousness). Excellent and intriguing as usual but you should have read and enjoyed "Seth Speaks" or "Nature of personal reality" before you dig into this one. However, I just finished reading it for the third time and (again) it's been like a new book to me.

Ask to see your counterpart!!!

I will tell you a story. After reading this book, I wondered if I had a counterpart anywhere near my home!! I asked in my mind to be shown this person, if there was one, and to be shown in such clarity that I would recognize him or her!! As I sat in a cafe, about a week later, a man came into the cafe with a small child. He was wearing the exact clothes I was wearing, down to the running shoes. We had the same shirt on and khaki pants! We had the same body shape, he being a bit taller. He had gotten out of a silver Mercedes( I used to dream about owning one!) Every hair on my body stood up. The child with him had a t-shirt on which read "Sister". My own sister in this life lived one day, "died" in 1942. I had this most wonderful feeling of peace. Just coincidence? No, I don't think so. Cheers!

Hurrah! At long last!

I have been waiting for this book to come out on kindle. It's absence presented a yawning gap in the availability of Seth's books on kindle. This is my personal favorite of the Seth books. In it, he delves deep into the true nature of what we call reality. I have read nothing else that approaches the depth and truth of this book. It has been many years since I last read my hardcover copy, and I'm itching to dig into the kindle version. This book sits at the top of my list of the most important books ever written.

Now I can't wait for volume two.

About the Author

James Morone (B.A., Middlebury College, and M.A. and PhD, University of Chicago) is Professor of Political Science at Brown University and five-time winner of the Hazeltine Citation for outstanding teacher of the year. A renowned scholar of American Political Science, Dr. Morone, an award-winning author, has published eight books including The Heart of Power (2009), Hellfire Nation (2003), and The Democratic Wish (1990). He served as President of the Politics and History Section of the American Political Science Association from 1999-2000 and the New England Political Science Association from 2002-03. He has been on the board of editors for eight scholarly journals and comments on politics in The New York Times, The London Review of Books, and The American Prospect.

Rogan Kersh (M.A. and PhD, Yale) is Provost and Professor of Political Science at Wake Forest University. A leading scholar in American Political Science, Dr. Kersh is best known for his work on health reform, obesity politics, and interest groups/lobbying. From 2006-12 he served as Associate Dean of the Wagner School of Public Service at New York University, where he built an undergraduate program, helped conceive and create NYU's new campus in Abu Dhabi, and was integral in the launch of a new Global Institute of Public Health. Dr. Kersh has published two books, more than fifty academic articles, and has provided commentary on U.S politics for dozens of different media outlets including CNN, Newsweek, and The New York Times. He was President of the American Political Science Association's organized section on Health Politics and Policy in 2011-12, and is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.

Brief edition is vastly different than the regular addition thought the covers look the same.

Blue bottom on front cover is brief edition & black at the bottom is the regular edition. There is a difference in the way it is set up. My professor said it was the same but when we got into studying for exams I struggled. 90% of the class was lecture so when she assigned reading I couldn't find what she was asking for. Parts of chapter 4 in the regular addition are in chapter 3 in the brief. Know which one you need for class. The covers should have more changes than a color stripe at the bottom to distinguish which book is which. Getting the wrong book will make an easy class hard. I learned the lesson the hard way so you wouldn't.

This is not the "full" edition!

Warning! Amazon's "" make no mention of the fact that this is the "Brief Second Edition," but in fact these ISBNs are indeed for the brief version. The only clue that as to which version this item is appears in the image of the cover, in tiny dark blue print.
