Practicing Statistics: Guided Investigations for the Second Course, by Shonda Kuiper, Jeff Sklar

Building on the introductory course, Practicing Statistics: Guided Investigations for the Second Course presents a variety of compelling topics for a second course in statistics, such as multiple regression, nonparametric methods, and survival analysis. Every topic is introduced in the context of a real-world research question, asking students to explore the concepts firsthand with guided activities and research projects.

The number of students taking AP Statistics continues to rise, and the number of students taking an introductory statistics course has more than doubled since 1990. As a result, the goals of the second course have changed. This course must engage students from multiple disciplines and demonstrate the broad applicability of statistics to their lives. To that end, this text takes an inquiry-based approach that teaches advanced statistical techniques through group work and hands-on exploration using real research questions.

The chapters are modular, so that instructors can select only the topics relevant to their course, and teach them in any order. The only prerequisite is an algebra-based introductory statistics or AP statistics course.

Great Modern Intermediate Stats Course Book With Great Resources
By Jill F. Lundell
I have been using this book for 3 semesters in my intermediate statistics class and I have really liked it. The presentation of the material is project based and covers many current topics. The authors have not made the book tied to a specific software package and have provided software guides online for free for R and Minitab. I have found this very helpful since I am teaching the class with R.

My CD also stuck to the packaging and was destroyed when I tried to remove it. However, all of the CD materials are available online for free so it was not a problem. My students like they they can download the materials so that they didn't have to open up the CD in case.

The Way of the Runner: A Journey into the Fabled World of Japanese Running, by Adharanand Finn

Welcome to Japan, the most running-obsessed nation on earth, and home to a unique running culture unlike anything we’ve ever experienced.

It may come as a surprise to many people, but Japan is the most running-obsessed country on earth. A 135-mile relay race, or "ekiden," is the country's biggest annual sporting event. Thousands of professional runners compete for corporate teams in some of the most competitive races in the world. The legendary "marathon monks" run a thousand marathons in a thousand days to reach spiritual enlightenment.

Yet so much of Japan's running culture remains a mystery to the outside world, on par with many of the unique aspects of contemporary Japan. Adharanand Finn, the award-winning author of Running with the Kenyans, spent six months immersed in this one-of-a-kind running culture to discover what it might teach us about the sport and about Japan.

As an amateur runner about to turn 40, he also hoped to find out whether a Japanese approach to training might help him run faster. What he learns―about competition, team work, form, chasing personal bests, and about himself―will fascinate and surprise anyone keen to explore why we run and how we might do it better.

Review
“What an adventure! From the first page, I was hooked. A heartwarming journey into a wonderful world that I never knew existed until Finn swept me up and brought me there.” (Christopher McDougall, author of NATURAL BORN HEROES and BORN TO RUN)

“Engaging. The Way of the Runner drops us deep behind lines in the land of the rising sun.” (Newsweek)

“A great look at Japanese distance running and will provide an interesting read to anyone who wants to know what makes a particular running community tick. If you liked Running With the Kenyans then you will definitely enjoy this.” (Athletics Weekly)

“Finn’s explorations of Japanese running culture will be fascinating to anyone who enjoys the sport or is interested in learning about life in Japan.” (Library Journal)

“Combines great storytelling with immersive research. Finn, a lovely, anxious narrator as he approaches his 40th birthday worried about his race times, discovers how utterly ingrained in the Japanese psyche running is―as a mainstay of both community and psychology. Useful as a fresh perspective on your own running.” (Alexandra Heminsley, author of RUNNING LIKE A GIRL)

“Brilliant, funny, charming and wise. Finn shines a light on a way of life that puts serious running at the heart of its culture and shows why the way of the runner: the racing and preparation, but also the culture, diet and lifestyle, is really a way of life―one that all of us, runners and non-runners alike should all aspire to.” (Robin Harvie, author of WHY WE RUN)

The writer of "Running with the Kenyans" heads off to Kyoto and the results are just as good
By Andy Orrock
I was a big fan of Adharanand Finn's "Running with the Kenyans." I love his immersive style. He moved to the Rift Valley with his family for that one. Here, he troops the entire family -- including three young children -- to the suburbs of Kyoto to explore Japan's Ekiden running culture. Indeed, the book is as much about his family's journey as it is about his deep dive into Ekiden. Let's just say that anyone's romantic ideal of a vacation journey via the Trans-Siberian railway will be put off the idea for good here.

I loved the premise of this idea. I've been intrigued with Japanese running since the days of the great Boston marathon champion and long-time 25k and 30k WR holder, Toshihiko Seko. [In fact, if I have one quibble about the book, it's that I wish Finn had sought out Seko for comment...or maybe he did and the famously monkish Seko turned him away.]

Finn does well to tie the discipline and struggle of running to the self-professed ideal traits of the Japanese. I like the way he uses Robert Whiting's seminal book, "You Gotta Have Wa." Whiting did much the same thing as Finn, but used baseball as his vehicle. Finn quotes Whiting's work: "The Japanese believe that only through endless training can one achieve the unity of mind and body necessary to excel . . . The traditional view in this rich but cramped and resource-poor land is that nothing comes easily, and that only through doryoku (effort) and the ability to persevere in the face of adversity can one achieve success."

Finn finds that the obsessive Ekiden culture fits Japan like hand in glove...the ideas that the nail that is stuck up gets hammered down, and of sacrifice of the individual for the sake of the team. These ideas are steeped deep into Japanese culture. Finn points out that the dominant theme of Manga, Japan's rich graphic novel scene, is not of individual glory and triumph, but rather of personal struggle until our hero learns to become part of the team.

That leads to some perverse outcomes in Japanese running. In terms of pure magnitude of good runners, the numbers are shocking. Finn juxtaposes results in Japan and his native UK, noting that "[a] few weeks after I return from Japan, the British half-marathon trials take place...The winner, Scott Overall, runs a time of 64 minutes 44 seconds. On the very same day, in Japan, the national university half-marathon championships take place. The student in that race finishing way back in 100th position runs almost exactly the same time as Overall, the British champion, finishing in a time of 64:47."

And, yet: "So yes, they are good. But in the end, the more interesting question was why are they not better? Why, with a highly developed running system unrivalled anywhere in the world, was the winner of the university championships that day, a full hundred places further ahead, only running 62:09? While this is quick, it’s hardly a time to cause even a ripple on the international stage."

Finn attributes this outcome to two factors: corporate sponsorship of Ekiden leads to a level of comfort for runners that the Kenyans and Ethiopians just don't have (some of those guys are running to literally put food on the table). And, of course, there's the constant theme of Japanese overwork. The word "Karo'shi" (death from overwork) never makes an appearance here, but its spectre is felt: Finn's book abounds with tales of injury from overwork and brutal coaches whose physical abuse would never be tolerated in most Western societies. One bright light: Finn focuses on a new breed of coaches whose sensitive, emotionally intelligent approach is the new broom sweeping out the old.

I bought and read the Kindle version and there's one odd, off-putting note: the editing. Do we really have an editor who does not know the difference between "Its" and "it's" and "affect" and "effect"? It's jarring to read sentences like these two:

"Interestingly, in women’s ekiden running, Hakone has the opposite affect."

"We stick it in a pot and hang things off it’s three tiny branches."

The misuse of "it's" for "its" pops up a dozen or more times. It's a discordant note on an otherwise enjoyable book.

By Pisces_Runner-79
I wish he'd gone more into depth on the "marathon monks" of Mt. Hiei. This is more of a travelogue of one guy than a truly in depth focus on the ekiden system of Japanese running. It goes into adequate surface detail of the Japanese corporate relationship with ekiden running but if you want a true history of that sport you should look at other sources. I have not read Mr. Finn's other book about the Kenyan runners yet, so I cannot really compare this work with his other one, but as a standalone piece, this book only gives a taste of Japanese running that the reader may wish to learn more about.

When is his next coming out??
By kenmaready
I was a huge fan of Running With the Kenyans, having read it front-to-back twice and going back for certain parts of it more often. So I was very excited to see Adharanand had tackled a new running topic in The Way of the Runner. And I loved it. He has a writing style like no other, weaving together science, culture, current thoughts on training and nutrition, humor and flashes from his own personal life to put together a complex puzzle that is engaging, informative, thought-provoking and fun as hell. He immerses himself (and his family) in the different cultures he's investigating and the result is a far more personal and complete picture than one would get by research and interviews alone. I finished this one in two days and can only hope he's got another running culture to tackle, and I can't wait to see it.

Too many of the pathology books get written with a lot of verbose dialogue. With all the information that you need to know, having a bullet pointed list of absolute facts is nice without having to sift for them. Great for taking notes in too. Think I may get the whole series.

Outstanding treatment of an important philosopher
By skytwo
Sir Karl Raimund Popper led a remarkable life, although from most accounts it didn't do much to lend him a sense of humility or good grace. That's as it may be, but it doesn't detract from his tremendous, thought largely forgotten, contributions to Western thought in the last sixty years.
In a country and time where academic discourse is dominated by high-flown and jargonistic theories, Popper's legacy is one that needs to be remembered (in fact, I've loaned this book to several people, and they've all told me that they hadn't realized just how influential his ideas have been). His approach is in the tradition of European liberalism-- Popper was an implacable foe of totalitarianism, mysticism, and absolutism of any sort. As the political left comes more and more to resemble the political right in terms of argumentation and language, it is genuinely refreshing to find that just a short time ago one of the most highly regarded scientist/philosophers of the modern age dedicated his life to fighting for intellectual honesty, academic rigor, and a better life for all of mankind.
Bryan Magee is an engaging philosopher and writer in his own right (this as well as his other books are genuinely fun to read), and does a brilliant job of presenting an accessible and comprehensive overview of Popper's major tenets. From the Open Society to World Three to Scientific Logic, all of Popper's major contributions to the humanities are represented here, and all are eloquently explained-- with extensive use of quotes from Popper's own writings.
The fact that one of the most highly-regarded 20th century philosophers is now virtually unknown-- in spite of the fact that he spent decades fighting against Nazism, fascism, and racism-- is a sad indicator of the strange turns that academic humanist thought has taken in the last couple of decades. At under 150 pages, this is a quick read. But the ideas are timeless, and contain many ideas curiously missing from much of present-day discourse-- from explaining the ways in which each of us view the world in which we live to suggesting ways in which we do our part to provide a better existence for our fellow humans.

Superb
By Nathaniel R. Brown
I, too, have passed copies of this slim book to numerous friends. It was first handed to me by a friend who virtually locked me into a room with orders not to come out until I had read it. I did so, and have re-read it several times since, always to my advantage.

Magee serves Popper well, and one effect has been to encourage me to read several of Popper's own books, also highly recommended.

But most importantly, I have found several of Popper's ideas extremely valuable, notably his views on how science is "done" (that is, the value of theories being proven wrong, which has helped me in my own work in a highly technical field), and his views (in "The Open Society and its Enemies") on the need for dissent if a society is to be able to adapt and grow (which is inherent in Popper's view on science). Magee's book is a brilliant introduction to these ideas.

Very highly recommended, easy to assimilate, stimulating - and not even a long read!

Chinese Village, Socialist State, by Edward Friedman, Professor Paul G. Pickowicz, Mark Selden, Kay Ann Johnson

The detailed portrait of social change in the North China plain depicts how the world of the Chinese peasant evolved during an era of war and revolution and how it in turn shaped the revolutionary process. The authors spent a decade interviewing villagers and rural officials, exploring archives, and investigating villagers with diverse resources and cultural, traditions, and they vividly describe both the promise and the human tragedy of China's rural revolution. Exploring the decades before and after the establishment of the People's Republic in 1949, they trace the growing economic desperation and cultural disintegration that led to the revolution, the reforms undertaken by the Communist leadership that initially brought economic gains and cultural healing, and the tensions that soon developed between party and peasantry. They show that the Communist antimarket and collectivist strategies which culminated in the imposed collectivization of 1955-56 and the disastrous Great Leap Forward of 1958-60, clashed with cherished peasant cultural norms and economic aspirations. Eventually the party's attack on peasant values and interests, the authors find, produced a rupture that threatened both developmental and socialist goals and destroyed the democratic potential of the revolution at its best.

Insightful and informative
By TIM ZACHERNUK
It has been two years since I read this book, but I see it hasn't had a review yet, and I think it deserves one, so I add my two bits.
A very detailed analysis of the developments in rural Chinese society over a period of massive upheaval. Provides tremendous insight into the social mechanisms at play, and the interplay of contemporary political movements with the traditional power structures in rural China. For anyone interested in or involved in rural development in China, a drama which is still going on in the 21st century, a must read. Also recommended for anyone interested in the interactions between policy-directed, centrally planned development and the way society responds to it.
Would like to see a similar follow up on the years between the cultural revolution and the present.

chinese village, socialist state
By A Customer
This volume makes important contributions to our understanding of the Chinese revolution. . . . The entrenchment of networks of loyalty among local leaders and higher level officials of the emerging party-state is a central element of the authors' analysis. As the state extended its control over both the urban and rural economies, it increasingly monopolized the allocation of scarce resources. . . . Given the authors' trenchant critique of the Communist party's economically irrational commitment to rapid, large-scale collectivization, it is unfortunate that they have not addressed the implications of their work for the decollectivizing rural reforms of the post-Mao era, when many aspects of the peasant household economy have been restored. Perhaps there is a sequel in the making

A major contribution to the history of China in the Twentieth Century
By David Hamilton
Indispensable for anyone seeking to understand life in rural China from the the late 1930s through the early 1960s. An extrordinary synthesis of disciplines--anthropology, history, and political science--that blends extensive field work with thorough archival research. The only shortcomings are editorial: a failure to introduce and summarize the issues covered in abundant, sometimes excessive and repetitive detail, in each chapter.

Short, easy to read and inspirational
By Thomas A. Fenton
I had seen the movie, but had never read the book, so when I found "PT 109..." for sale at a flea market, ( 1961, first printing, 220 pages, hardback) I decided the time had come to do so. I was 15 and too young to vote in 1960 when John Fitzgerald Kennedy ran for President of The United States, but I was aware of some of the campaign rhetoric for and against his election. In the years that followed, I was neither pro- or con- on the issue of his presidency, until November 22, 1963 when Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated him. All I was aware of was he had a fitness program that annoyed me greatly because it impinged on my teenage laziness. That is until November 22 when I, like the rest of America and the world cried at the thought that someone could do this evil thing. Since then I had considered him heroic as a martyr is considered heroic. Reading Robert J. Donovan's "PT 109..." has opened my eyes to the true measure of JFK's heroism in the 46 years he had in this life.

"PT109" is not so much about a boat, or a crew, or WW II, but about what happens when you put them together, and call forth the best they can produce. NOW I am impressed with the man. He was not the kind of hero that produced awesome stories of great events in great numbers. He was an ordinary man who was capable of heroic acts who called forth the best he had in him, who did what he had to do, and who did it impressively well. NOW I understand why he was so loved, respected and appreciated by those who knew him personally.

Donovan has produced what I consider an excellent description of courage, leadership, determination, and loyalty. Kennedy embodied all these traits in abundance, and, as a result, earned his way to the White House. "PT 109..." is also about survival, war time naval life, and the trials of military life in general. Along with these elements, the author skillfully weaves in humorous vignettes and descriptions of the flora and fauna of some of the islands and word pictures of the islands themselves. His descriptions of Kennedy shortly after his rescue is a good example of his linguistic talent:

"Here he was, bearded, gaunt, unwashed, half-starved, half-naked, blotched with festering coral wounds, castaway on a miserable patch of jungle surrounded by sharks, being greeted as if he were in his father's embassy in London." (pg. 187)

His description of one of the islands was also helpful in "seeing" the place:

"If Lumberi was a wilderness, Lambu Lambu was little more than a mangrove swamp, where green lizards a foot long glided over damp roots and scorpions dropped out of trees into PT boats moored below. Lambu Lambu Cove leads back into a small river, which is known to the natives as the Katapaqu but which could as suitably be called Styx. It is a dark, fetid stream that flows through blackened mangrove roots into heavy jungle and looks as though it may disappear eventually into a dismal cavern. The screech of strange birds pierces the foliage..."

Contrary to what was written by one Amazon dot Com reviewer, this book is not boring. It is anything but boring. While it would not rise to the level of a fast paced action thriller, it is a page turner. There is great suspense and good story telling to be found in the descriptions of PT 109's collision with the Amagiri, the Japanese destroyer that rammed her (109) and the hours just before and just after. There is likewise good storytelling and great suspense in the crew's efforts to survive and find their way to an island not covered by Japanese, avoid shark attacks, and then to get from island to island where they could be found and rescued. Admittedly this is only a part of the story, yet it is still the central part of the adventure, and this reader was well pleased with Donovan's work. Further, the author rounds out and finishes the story bringing us briefly to the White House in 1961. I am really sorry that the other reviewer found this boring. He obviously missed the point of the book, which was not to thrill and excite, but to tell an authentic story of strength and the ordinary heroism, possibly waiting to be brought out in all of us.

Therefore, I give Robert J. Donovan five very satisfied and enthusiastic stars for PT 109.

Note: This review is from the 1961 first edition, hard cover, 220 pages.

Classic True War Story
By Nick Howes
He was an ambassador's son anxious to get into the war and a yachting fan which made him attractive to recuirters for the Patrol Torpedo service of the US Navy. After a couple desk jobs, Jack Kennedy finally got his assignment, skipper at the fairly low rank of lieutenant, junior grade, of his own craft....PT 109.

PT boats were as good a way as any to commit suicide. A mere 80-foot long, made of plywood, with ten crewmembers, a couple guns, four torpedoes. In the early days of the war during the Solomon Islands campaign (best known island: Guadalcanal), the PT boats were thrown in to provide muscle for the fleet against the Japanese. It was not coincidental that PT boats were made of plywood, which did not put them in conflict with the needs for steel for the larger ships shipyards were turning out. Only later in the war as the fleet was built up did the mission of the PT boat broaden out to include a wider variety of missions.

Early in the war, though, their job was to station themselves along sea approaches to likely resupply and landing sites, and attack the ships trying to run their guantlet, often using torpedoes that didn't want to fire.

One of the most noteworthy failures was when PT boats attacked a four destroyer convoy taking troops to Kolombangara. Word was not passed to PT 109 about the action although they were on the alert in the dark overcast. Suddenly, the destroyer Amagiri ran right through the ship, killing two men, leaving the others to founder. After sunrise, Kennedy, despite a back injury, towed one badly burned crewman while the rest clung to a wooden slat and kicked, heading toward an island where they could hole up.

Kennedy held the group together and went out the night they arrived to swim near where the PT boats were expected to pass. After a couple days of this, a couple natives dispatched by an Australian coastwatcher encountered the group and got word back to start the rescue.

This is a carefully researched story by Robert J. Donovan who talked to the survivors, other ex-Navy veterans, Kennedy himself, and flew to the South Pacific where he was able to find and interview the natives Solomon Islanders who helped in the rescue. He describes not just the fear, but the boredom, the sweltering heat, the bugs, the disease, and the other obstacles faced by these dedicated warriors.

In his 40th anniversary forward, Donovan talks about the experience of writing the book and Kennedy's hand-picking of his portrayer for the movie based on it (Jackie's choice, Warren Beatty, was unavailable). In his own foreword, journalist Daniel Schorr provides some interesting insights on service in World War II and in later wars.

Excellent book.

A Profile in Courage of JFK and Others...
By C. B. Miller
The book is very detailed and descriptive. Some today might say the book's pace could be a little faster. However, it is still a good read. The book shows how the men of that generation volunteered to go into the service and then into harm's way; regardless of their background, education, or families money. Truly, as fellow author Stephen Ambrose stated they were "Citizen Soldiers". This book is not a combat, action-packed wartime epic but instead about Jack Kennedy and other Navy men and how they got into the PT Boat service and their experiences in the Pacific war.

It is ironic that JFK could have been killed on several occasions, such as when Japanese dive-bombers and fighters hit Rendova Harbor right before the fateful intercept patrol with Japanese destroyers. Further, Jack Kennedy just missed being killed when the incident with the Amagiri occurred. Further, the author does a very good job laying out the facts of that incident.

It is telling of Jack's leadership and character when later he asks the surviving crew members if they want to "fight or surrender". When it was about to be put to a vote, Kennedy stated, "There's nothing in the book about a situation like this. A lot of you men have families and some of you have children. What do you want to do? I have nothing to lose" (page 119). Here is a man who went to Harvard, his father was Ambassador to England with a family both well known & wealthy, and JFK states he has "nothing to lose". Whether a reader likes the Kennedy family or not, this book tells the true story of a young JFK who rose to the challeges put in front of him.

The only criticism I would have is that JFK's time as commander of the PT-59 is only very briefly mentioned in the main book. However, one could argue that this is a book focusing on Jack's time with the PT-109, only. The new Foreword and new Preface to the 40th Anniversary Edition help put things in perspective. The new Afterward gives some detailed information on the history of American PT Boats and JFK's time as skipper of the PT-59 (after the PT-109).

Soldier of Misfortune: A Gage Hartline Thriller (Volume 3), by Chuck Driskell

Gage Hartline is in no condition to accept a dangerous mission inside the Peruvian drug trade. He's at a personal low point – and he needs something to make him forget. But he's never accepted a job like this before. For the first time ever, Gage signs a contract to kill someone in cold blood. Gage’s target is Sonny Calabrese, a ruthless American living in Lima, Peru. Sonny employs teams of elite soldiers – like Gage – to steal cocaine from the cartels and sell it at an extreme profit. When Sonny grows tired of his own people, he murders them. Creatively. Bizarrely. And now he must pay. Against the advice of his mentor, Gage accepts the contract, believing it’s a skewed mission of mercy. He’s working for the families of the dead. But not everything is as it seems. There’s a deadly undercurrent of greed surrounding Sonny Calabrese’s organization, and Gage finds himself sucked into the vortex. SOLDIER OF MISFORTUNE is the third entry in the Gage Hartline series and combines espionage and suspense with plenty of action. Typical of a Driskell thriller, the story blends memorable characters with a lush, international backdrop. The Gage Hartline series is under contract with Solipsist Films and TO THE LIONS, second in the series, is currently in development as a movie.

~~Corruption and Greed Equals a Captivating Read~~
By USN Chief, Ret..VT Town
This is one intense and captivating read from the first to the last page. It is filled with intrigue plus has the corruption that the cocaine industry has created interwoven into this spell binding novel. Gage Hartline is employed working for a retired CEO of a credit card company. This is a most lucrative position with ample time off. Gage decides to visit his mentor, COL Hunter (now retired) in Fayetteville. Gage wants to run a new employment job by him. And, as expected, the COL doesn't like the portion about 'killing for hire', if necessary. Gage decides to accept the new challenge but something doesn't click about his employer, Falco. What is that old saying about 'trusting your gut'? Off to Lima he goes and he becomes gainfully employed by Alfa Seguridad led by Sonny Calabrese. All of these employees were elite soldiers prior to going to Lima, Peru, to work for Sonny.

This is one roller coaster ride - from the US to Lima and back again - some of the characters create mayhem and havoc; others are trying to take over the cocaine business and some just outright want to kill and kill some more. There is a scene in a garage in SC that I will not forget soon. And, I nearly forgot the dual scene at La Merced.! My word, that is incredible, too. The monetary value of the cocaine when broken down by kilo is mind boggling. When one discovers the people responsible for transporting the coke and the manner in which it is done, one will be completely flabbergasted!

All in all, a well written novel with twists and turns along many of the paths. The characters have a depth to them that is not normally found in a book. Their backgrounds enhance the characters so the reader is able to gain more perspective into their lives than normal. Plot is well conceived, excellent mix of characters and the ending is both surprising and justified.

Most highly recommended.

Soldier of Misfortune is Driskell's Coming of Age
By anguillabear
To say that Gage Hartline is drawn to dangerous situations is a bit like saying Bill Clinton enjoys the company of women or Kim Kardashian doesn't mind a little publicity. Like a moth drawn to a flame, Gage simply can't help himself!

When Gage is offered the chance to go undercover in Peru to find out why ex-soldiers working for narco-baron Sonny Calabrese keep turning up dead, his most revered and trusted mentor pleads with him to turn and run the other way. Even Gage knows it is a suicide mission. But Gage Hartline is like a great thoroughbred race horse born to run - he can't change who he is even if it ultimately costs him his life.

One of the best things about Driskell's evolution as a writer is his blossoming ability to seamlessly create breathtaking and harrowing plots while gradually revealing Hartline's admirable yet flawed character. With every book I learn more about what drives this heroic and sometimes tragic man. At first glance, it is tempting to see him as an unrepentant adrenaline addicted mercenary. But he is far more than that. He is, first and foremost, a protector who is guided by a deeply ingrained sense of personal justice that overrides any and all allegiances and relationships. Gage sees this as an almost noble calling and will not allow anything or anyone to interfere with what he believes to be his duty.

The conflicts this creates and his struggles to reconcile duty with the normal personal desires of love, friendship, home, etc... are fascinating to watch evolve.

Soldier of Misfortune allows us to see Gage's continuing evolution as a hero and as a man. It also allows us to see Driskell continue to evolve as a tremendously skilled author. Driskell gets better with each novel and I believe Soldier of Misfortune marks his coming of age as a master of the thriller genre.

Another great covert ops book.
By RARowland, Cincinnati reviewer
This was #3 in the Gage Hartline series. I had read books 1 and 2, and reviewed both. Like those prior to this book, "...Misfortune" well satisfied my love for covert ops. I like the intrigue laid out by the antagonists, in this case, an American expatriate operating a drug stealing operation against the Peruvian drug cartels. Hartline is sent to Peru to take out the head antagonist. Gage, the head protagonist of the story, equally set his own course of planning in order to carry out his mission. The intrigue by both Gage and the principal antagonist is what brings the story line to a compelling conclusion.
I don't re-tell story lines in my reviews, but suffice it to say, this covert ops book kept me "hooked" from page one to page last. The plot was well developed. The characters were also well developed. The story flowed continually without any "dead" spots. The book had great thread, by which I mean if/when I put it down and later came back to it, I did not have to re read pages to remember where I had left off. That's a good mark for story line delivery and reader memory.
For anyone interested in reading about the drug cartels and how they carry out their mission, and the covert ops employed to thwart that mission, this is an extremely interesting and enjoyable read.
Apart from this series, I have read other books by Chuck Driskell and enjoyed them as much...but those were reviews from another perspective.
I highly recommend this book and believe any one reading it will agree it was time well spent.
