His book makes an eloquent case for a simple thesis: digital computing, far from being a panacea, has created as many problems as it solves. For Roszak, a fair measure of the fault lies with corporate hucksterism, a credulous educational establishment, and government's desire to control information. But the deeper worry is our own utopian techno-idealism--the belief that a scientific broom can sweep away our messy problems. The author challenges such computer messianism with a detailed, common-sense look at the history of what computing has actually brought us. The trends he sees--the conflation of data with knowledge, the erosion of human-centered values, and the rise of a digital oligarchy at just about everyone else's expense--are tough to deny. A Full-Broadsided Body Punch To Conventional Wisdom!

This book is a thoughtful and thought-provoking examination of both the meaning of and the consequences associated with the rising computer information cult within contemporary society. Roszak is a skilled writer and an even more perceptive thinker. He quickly disposes of the contemporary idea equating data or information, on the one hand, with knowledge and wisdom, on the other hand. He despairs of the notion that technological progress is an unalloyed blessing, and provides a lot of supporting documentation illustrating that for all those capabilities we gain through the use of digital technology, for example, we also lose important capabilities and perspectives.
According to Roszak, we have now come to almost rely on exclusively rational,"logical", and quantifiable methods of understanding everything around us, often to the detriment of ignoring more traditional and time-honored methods of knowing. This, in turn, leads to a very narrow perspective of how it is that the world operates, one devoid of anything not quantitative, anything comprised of more "qualitative" means of observation. Thus, to the digitally oriented logical and rational mind, anything not disposed to undertanding through calculation and the scientific method simply is not real. Furthermore, he shows us, such digital computing techniques creates as many problems as it solves.
He fears for good reason that we are falling into a hyperbolized and superficial culture where we have come to completely depend on scientific rationalism as it is depicted by the media, and that this creates a conundrum we cannot escape from, since many of the problems associated with modern society stem from this increasingly exlusively scientific and rational approach toward problem-solving.
As with other contemporary critics of the new Digital Intelligence cult like social critic Neil Postman, Roszak argues for a more comprehensive perspective , one that places the tools of computer technology at the behest of a more broad-based intelligence, one that recognizes that there is a whole range of ways of knowing and understanding that those contained in programming code. This is a provocative and thought-indicing book. I enjoyed and learned from it, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys watching a superior intellect at work, and who also appreciated the thread of a finely-hewn intellectual argument. Enjoy!

The Flip Side of Technopilia

I wasn't sure what to expect from a "neo-Luddite" treatise, but this book was very readable and interesting, a good counterpart to all the rah-rah hype of the tech industry. It was originally published in 1986, so some of it is dated, but the ideas Roszak expresses are still relevant and important.

Roszak is not anti-technology, but he warns that the over-emphasis on using computers and computer algorithms to substitute for things like teaching, labor, economic forecasting, etc. are undermining the value of human thought, ideas and creativity. He argues that computer technology should be used as a tool, not an end in itself.

I wish that this book was updated or that Roszak would write something else that addresses the rise of social media and mobile technology, but as it is, I think it's a really good introduction to critical thinking about technology and how it is shaping our world.

Cleddie Keith, an Assemblies of God minister, has been consumed with a passion for revival since the days of the Charismatic and Jesus Movement in the '70s. While serving on a pastoral staff at Oak Lawn Church in Houston, God began a sweeping revival. At that time, 1,000 students from Jackson Junior High were swept into the kingdom of God. It was at this time that Cleddie began a life-long quest for revival. Today, as the senior pastor at his church, Cleddie hosts a weekly revival meeting every Friday night with numerous salvations and a packed meeting every time. Pastors and congregations within a 150-mile radius visit this service. Under his leadership the church has become a hub for revival in the Cincinnati area.

"Fast doubt"...right Cleddie?

Cleddie is a powerful and emotional speaker. His style is unique and capturing, and that is why he is dangerous. When listening to or reading his words, it's important to remember that emotional and capturing speech is not just used by God.

It comes as no surprise to me that Cleddie would seek to tackle such a simple subject as the lord's prayer to bilk money out of people. It fits with what I know about him. Simple subject, emotionally presented, take the money and run.

Don't waist your time with a book on the Lord's Prayer, if you want to know how to pray, look it up in your Bible and read it for yourself. You are smart enough to tell what's going on with out having to read a whole book about it. Even if you don't think you can grasp it, there are many free resources and sermons on the web that deal with the topic.

If you must buy this book, please buy it used. If he is not really in this for money, he won't mind.

An annointed man of God

Cleddie is a very annointed man of God. I was born-again and filled with the Holy Spirit, healed, deloivered and set free at Heritage Fellowship in 2003. The Friday night river services were life changing. This book and everything written by Pastor Cleddie Keith is annointed. I reccomend this book. I also reccomend "Praying the Ten Commandments" by Cleddie.

Dark Psychological thriller ride!

Noah and Devon are the spawn of a sadistic father. They are raised in the shadows with complete lack of empathy and no respect of personal relationships. Instead, they were taught complete disregard for life, especially that of women.

A series of events left them to fend for themselves. They used the only skill they were taught and became rapist, tormentors and killers for hire. Well...Noah did. Devon was the watcher, preferring to see life through a camera lens and computer screen. This allowed him to retain an ounce of humanity but also a heaping amount of creepy stalker.

One particular job puts Nina Drake under Devon's surveillance, but it's only a matter of time before the contract for her brutal attack is fulfilled by Noah. That's crazy and really messed up, but after the attack is where the story gets really twisted.

Nina moves and hides. It takes a year, but she starts to heal with the help of a new neighbor. She paranoid and always has it in the back of her mind that her attacker will return to finish the job. Perhaps that is because he told her he would. This is where I stop with the story because it just has to be experienced.

If you've read the works of Ker Dukey and DH Sidebottom, you know their amazing minds can create a really twisted, crazy, messed up and Dark tale. This one is absolutely no exception. It is a dark psychological thrill ride on a rollercoaster to the darkest depths of...well...you know. I loved it. (It makes me wonder what the heck is wrong with me that I loved it, but loved it none the less.)

If you haven't read any books from these two authors please read some reviews and be prepared for your mind to be messed with and to experience twists you never see coming. Oh, and darkness, horror and more darkness.

WELL WELL Ker & D H Sidebottom have done it again I swear these 2 get better and better with each book they write but together is mind blowing
Nina Drake is a great Character she has it all great friends until one night she is attacked and that changes her life forever.
She ends up moving away and changing her name she shuts herself of from the world, until a new neighbour moves in and brings her out of more than just her nightmares.
But she still can't shake the feeling that she is being watched.... after what happened she don't trust anyone and the fact he told her he will one day be back for her.
However, When Devon moves in next-door she slowly learns to start trusting again.
But does Devon have a dark secret of his own that he is hiding from her?
Can she rebuild her life with knowing that one day her attacker might come back?
Well I cannot say much more without giving this book away you will have to read to find out

From the beginning I was captivated, in part fear and part curiosity. We begin our experience looking through the depraved eyes and lense of Devon Trent, in a scene that pulls you in instantly giving you a glimpse as to the darkness the future pages hold.

I was torn where Devon was concerned, I wanted to hate him...
"Monster.I was born from one, raised by one and brother to one"

and yet.. he knew beauty and craved love...
.."you disarm me, intoxicate and utterly beguile me. I'm in danger of losing my heart to you and you not wanting it."

Nina, is made to endure a horrific experience that you would not wish on your worst enemy. (Please be warned this book contains triggers and is not for everyone) She is held prisoner after the traumatizing event, always looking over her shoulder..

"My soul died that day and my fragile heart missed it's companion, the scars inside and out"

...until she meets her new neighbor and slowly realizes she's ready to live again.

That my friends is only 35% in. There is so much still left that I won't tell you. So much that needs to be discovered personally, page by brilliant page.

"Maybe fairytales are a myth for a reason. For some, the story doesn't have a happy ending"

I was once again blown away by the raw talent these two authors are graced with. Individually they are phenomenal writers, combined they are literary geniuses in my opinion. The power they hold over their readers is spellbinding. My experience with these authors is that you can never come to any conclusions. You never really know what the hero or the villain is truly capable of and NEVER think you have it all figured out. (They are the mistresses of plot twists after all)

They toy with our mind. Striking fear and intrigue from the very first page. The book never leveled off, only seeming to increase in speed. Before you know it, It's daybreak and you are left hollow and in what is sure to be on of your biggest book hangovers.

You are in for one hell of a ride while reading this erotic thriller

If you buy and read only 1 book this summer, make it Bread of Angels. This amazing story by Tessa Afshar, based on Lydia and the book of Acts, made me feel I experienced what it was like in Thyatira, learned about the purple trade, what people experienced. For the first 250 pages, we learn of Lydia's back story, and then the apostle Paul, Silas, Timothy, Luke, and a character added in arrive at Philippi where the women are worshipping God as recorded in Acts. By the time I finished the book, I felt like I walked in Philippi, met with the church there, and got new insight about events and people from Acts which apply to my own life. Beautifully done without adding too much "between the lines" of the Biblical text. Don't pass this up!

I loved it!!

I loved it so much. This book is so very much infused with the Gospel. I went back and read the Biblical account and it became so much bigger to me! It opened my eyes to more of the Scriptures and helped me feel more aquainted with Paul. Most importantly, it redirected me to Jesus, and the simplicity of the Gospel and what that means to mankind. The love of God is real.

books I've in my collection but this one is

the most structured and gives full insight

into existing and novel ring and LC

oscillators circuits. Some times it could

be somewhat more to the point, and the

discussed phase noise simulation method

is limited to quasi-linear oscillators, but

on the other hand the new theory on I/Q

oscillators is very insighful.

I did have a good knowledge obout both LC oscillators and ring oscillators, this book does not give anything new or interesting about oacillators design, it is a collection of results of papers and comments on them.
i was disappointed in the contents of it.

A pleasant valentine for the First Ladies

This is a pleasant valentine for ten first ladies. It is not profound but neither is it particularly critical. A few of the anecdotes appeared in Brower's The Residence. Many of the stories she shares are already widely known: the coolness between Barbara Bush and Nancy Reagan, the Clintons' profane arguments, the fact that Michelle Obama was not particularly happy about moving to Washington and into the White House, and so on.
At first Brower appears to want to make readers think that the First Ladies have some special relationship because of the role they shared, however, that theme doesn't really work. In fact, the only two first ladies who seemed to have developed a true friendship were Lady Bird Johnson and Betty Ford. Rosalind Carter remained bitter for a while after her husband's defeat and even was somewhat resentful because Hillary Clinton did not ask her anything about health care although that had been Rosalind's major effort has first lady. Nancy Reagan doesn't seem to have cared much for any of them with the possible exception of Jackie Kennedy Onassis (snob appeal, maybe?) There is one photograph of several of the women at an event which tells all. The five or six others appear to be talking to each other but Mrs. Reagan is at the end of the table and is turned completely away. The expression on her face says, more or less, "when will this purgatory end"?
All in all, the book is interesting as a sidelight into the lives of these women who have tried to fufill the role as best they could. Some more successfully than others. Some tidbits are fascinating. Laura Bush has an image of the perfect southern lady who never loses her cool but evidently there were times when she could make her displeasure known, especially toward a staff member who kept losing the keys to her daughter's car. Pat Nixon was much liked and admired by her staff as was Barbara Bush.
The only real criticism I have of the book is its organization. Brower skips around and repeats herself at times. Perhaps organizing it chronologically completely would have made for a more cohesive story.

I really enjoyed her first book

I really enjoyed her first book, "The Residence". I felt like this book was just the rest of her notes from her previous research with a few extra interviews thrown in. It is chaotically organized and not well written. I really believe she had so much left over research from her first book, that she decided to throw it all into another.
There is a lot of fascinating information and stories, so I'm not suggesting not reading it. I just think she should have taken some more time and created a more cohesive book.

Should've been written chronologically

I was very excited about this book because I'm extremely interested in this era of American history, but I'm confused about the reviews. Several readers mention they feel that this is a "well written" and "thoroughly researched" work. I'll give Brower the points on research (I'm sure this was quite a task to undertake), but I'm lost at the notion that people feel this book is well-written.

In my opinion, this entire narrative reads like pages and pages of notes that someone has jotted down and published, prior to the editing process or prior to even formatting the story into a cohesive outline. Brower begins the introduction with a story of Hillary Clinton and Jackie Kennedy and later repeats the exact phrasing of this same story in a subsequent chapter. It's odd. The chapters in general are long-winded and only vaguely connected to their titles ("motherhood" for instance is the heading for one chapter but naturally, this topic is covered throughout the book, so this subdivision means little in the context of the entire thread) and because it's written out of order, the author is forced to constantly use last names and descriptions ("Amy's nanny," "Jack's doctor") repeatedly, even when writing about someone who's already been discussed.

Had my opinion been solicited (which I know is comical, given that the author is a NY Times #1 Best Seller), I would have definitely suggested putting it in chronological order. I know that many research accounts use examples of common themes from all of their subjects to illustrate the chosen category, but this writing bounces so all over the place that the author would've done better to start with Jackie and tell the story from her forward, interweaving the ladies' relationships with one another into the tale as the years progress. As it's written, we start with Jackie yachting with Hillary and circle back so many times to Pat Nixon, Betty Ford, Rosalynn Cater, and Lady Bird Johnson, that I'm constantly having to pause and remember, ok: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama. It's hard to keep it all straight as a younger person (even one who knows all the presidents in order from Washington) who didn't live through most of these years. The book, as a whole, feels extremely chaotic.

That being said, there is obviously interesting information about the women within these pages. You just have to mine through quite a bit of rough-edged stone to get to these precious jewels. I definitely believe the author's account as I think she is a credible source who clearly did her homework, and it does make the women come alive in a sense that one might not ordinarily understand. I do wonder though what the ladies think - or would think - of some of this information coming to light. Betty Ford comes off the best in my opinion while Nancy Reagan seems somewhat cold and borderline pathetic, and the others, (save Hillary Clinton who is really her own category, apart from "first lady," and the Bush ladies, who have personal philosophies barring them from complaining or self-pity) read like tragic figures, generally ruined by the role.

I'm not saying not to read this book... give it a shot, just understand that you have to focus and sift through some repetitive information to receive the benefits of the best parts. I personally wish it had been condensed and gone through another pass at editing, but I do commend Brower on bringing this story to our collective attention.

Even more than meets the eye

I accidentally stumbled on this book in the store. At first glance I thought it would be a great book to teach my young son about some of the mathematical principles, but this book is so much more. The book has theories, functions, principles, but more so, it has historical origin of some of those solutions and how they were derived. I thought it was an amazing piece of literature to have in the household, but then realized it is even more. My daughter's boyfriend is a math guru. He read and reads very advanced mathematical books and when I presented him with his own copy of this little gem, he found it to be a great addition to his library of books on the topic. Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone at any level. It is a must have.

Math for non math thinking people

This book is actually interesting! It explains mathematical principles in an understandable way, in a historical format from the begining of number use to the present day- or at least up to time of publication. It has interesting facts and philosophical information, along with dates of the "discovery" and the names of the people who came up with the principles and theories. I love how it demystifies math and shows how theories and principles evolved over time. And it's a pretty little book! Hard to find, as I think it may be out of print right now. Look for it used! I got a "new" copy from a used bookseller on Amazon and it was in perfect condition.

A Powerful Little Book

A powerful little book, terse and clear in its 1-2 page explanations, with a brief summary of the key principles involved, explanatory diagrams, and the name of the author and year of discovery.

Few topics in mathematics are left untouched -- from A to Z; i.e., from Archimedes to Zeno; from Relativity and Quantum Mechanics to Catastrophe Theory; from Chaos Theory to Zeno's and Russell's paradoxes, and Godel's Theorem, to the Traveling Salesman's Problem and everything in between.

Well organized and carefully researched.
