too much outdated information

Ok text book, but needs an update in the worst way. Too much film screen and not enough digital. Film screen is virtually history now, in fact there are almost no questions on the registry regarding film screen.

I know Mr. Bushong is predisposed with other life issues, but if they don't get with the program, some other text book will knock this off the pedestal

Received the wrong edition :(

I paid very little for this book, so I really can't be too upset. However, I ordered the 9th edition to study from and instead I received the 3rd edition. This wouldn't have been an issue except this edition is so outdated that the chapters I need are not included. :( I'm just going to donate this to the school and try again.

About the Author
Scott R. Burson is assistant professor of religion at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. Formerly, he served as director of communications at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. Burson has had articles published in several periodicals, including The Lamp-Post of the Southern California C. S. Lewis Society.

Jerry L. Walls is professor of philosophy of religion at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. His annual C. S. Lewis seminar is one of the school's most popular offerings. He is also author of Hell: The Logic of Damnation.

A Contrast That Could Have Been Done Better But Should Have Been Done

This book is deep, dealing with a pair of great apologists. It is not perfect, but it still is a great book, though I'm not in the majority. I'm reviewer #9 of this book, and the majority ruling is four stars (I'm only the second five star), with a pair of three star reviews and one each of two and one stars. So you might want to read the other reviews rather than rely on mine alone.

A friend of mine gave me this book because a) she thought I would enjoy it and b) it was too deep for her. It is a deep book -- it took me six months to work through it (though I've also read . . . and reviewed . . . other books during that time).

I started this book with some knowledge of both Lewis and Schaeffer, having read some of their writings, but not being very familiar. In reading this book, I found a common soul in Francis Schaeffer. However, this book leans toward Lewis. In every area where Lewis and Schaeffer disagreed, the authors sided with Lewis consistently while I just as consistently sided with Schaeffer. This should not be surprising, though, because both authors teach at Asbury which is closer to Lewis than Schaeffer in theology and both have written on Lewis. Thus, the book has a bias, but not an agenda. The authors, for example, pointed out that Schaeffer is the one with theological education.

Personally, I think one thing the authors should have done was to not comment. This book would have been stronger if they left their point of view out of it and let the reader make up his own mind after seeing the contrast of the two apologists.

The final chapter is useful in taking the insights of these two men and taking the lessons to the modern time.

One side comment that I need to make. About a year ago, I never heard of Molina and his view of middle knowledge. In a year, I've read three books referring to his views including this one. The first one was written by a compatabilist, while this book takes the opposite view. (The third was "The Apologetics Study Bible", where one of the writers was promoting Molina.)

Lessons Indeed from Two Valiant Christian Warriors

Burson and Walls have written an insightful, timely book here which draws upon the thoughts and ideas of two men, whom they rightly proclaim as the most influencial Christian apologists of our century. This book should be widely read by Christians everywhere, but it most likely won't be, because interest in theology and apologetics doesn't seem to be exactly thriving these days. Still, to those who feel that theology matters, this book is chock full of useful information. Schaeffer and Lewis are shown here to have held many different views towards issues such as predestination, the atonement, and divine revelation, but one thing they most certainly did agree upon: the absolute necessity for Christians to engage their culture with the liberating truths of their Master, Jesus. Burson and Walls make this clear, and glean some very practical lessons for the rest of us to take and ponder while continuing to "bear the Light" in the world as these two giants did. This book reveals the genius, passion and courage of both men, and I for one hope and pray that it will encourage believers everywhere to follow in their footsteps.

Use this as a Tool to Examine Your Own Faith

I selected this book to read after reading Hugh Hewett's "The Embarassed Believer". I wanted to get a better feel for what apologetics is about. What better place to go than to the two greatest apologists of the 20th century.
Burson and Walls certainly have a point of view, but I do not think that it detracts from their comparisons of Lewis and Schaeffer. I found that it pushed me to hold up my own beliefs to the same analyses they used on their subjects. I learned where I have strengths and where there are gaping holes in my understanding of the faith.
The territory covered is quite expansive, many of the areas of belief were outside of any regular theological discussions by lay leaders in my church experience. As a Christian called to lay ministry, I have found it important to carefully examine my own beliefs about the nature of the relationship between God and Man before trying to take the "good news" to those outside of the church.
As most comparisons of human-beings are, there are flaws. We are all flawed, but we all have something to say about who and what God is and does in the world. This book gives us a framework to build and articulate our own understanding of what faith in Jesus represents in the millenium ahead.

great 2nd book of the series!

Although I really loved Mobsters Girl (book 1 in the series) much more I really felt like Awakening the Mobster was really good in the sense that it was a nice thread for the story line. I enjoyed that I got to see Antonio's softer side but, what i really enjoyed was the glimpses of the toughness megan has inside her and I have a strong feeling this plays a major role in the series! I have to say that although I love antonio I also found myself loving Vito and his protectiveness of Erin ( do I detect a romance?! hmm...). I love the suspense and the backstabbing in the story since, although you expect it, you never know who it will be. Great book! I'm definitely ready to continue the story Now I just gotta wait for book 3.... :)

this is book two in the Mobster series which picks right up were book one left off. Meghan, Antonio, Vitto and Erin are on the after finding out Meghan and Erin's dad is the "cleaner" for Antonio's dad. So to hide out they all go to Notre Dame to visit Troy, there they learn that not everyone is who they claim to be and that some who claim to be loyal are working against them. A wonderful part of this book is that we get to see Antonio and Meghan's relationship grow and develop in this book. I loved Antonio he is the perfect hero he is ruthless in his protection of Meghan he will do anything to keep her safe and happy and won't let any man get in his way. And the care he shows for not only Meghan but her sister Erin was heart warming. But I have to say I fell in love with Vitto in this book he was captivating in this book, the hint at his love interest was perfect and I can only hope that Amy Rachiele either gives him his own story, or really continues giving him his voice in this series. I can not wait for book three Mobster's Vendetta to come out this is a fantastic story that I will follow till the end. All I can say is Bravo Amy Rachiele!

Sweet, Fun and Exciting! A Great Afternoon Read!

Awakening the Mobster is a continuation from book one titled Mobster's Girl and is a YA Romance written by Amy Rachiele.

The Review:
I like this series. It just keeps getting better! Book one left off with a cliffy and I really wanted to see how the next book would go. I wasn't disappointed. The second book was a great read and I really enjoyed it but I had the same problem with this book I had with book one. I'll start with the good points first.

Awakening the Mobster picks up right where book one, Mobster's Girl leaves off. It's a short read, coming in at about 120 pages. Antonio, Megan, Erin and Vito are on the run from the bad guys. Antonio and Vito are in charge of keeping Megan and Erin safe and between shoot outs, explosions, injuries, jealousy, betrayal, developing romance, new love interests and trying to enjoy the college experience; the guys have their hands full.

I really like Megan and Antonio. I fell in love with them in book one and was in the corner cheering them on. Their developing love is fascinating to read. It's intense and sweet and so much fun. Antonio doesn't put up with any crap on a normal day and he certainly doesn't put up with his girl, Megan, getting crap thrown at her. His protectiveness towards her, her sister and Vito is a beautiful thing.

In this story we also get a little side romance as it appears Vito has an interest in Erin. She's a bit young and was having a really hard time adjusting to the event in this book and though I hate how weak she was, I really enjoyed watching Vito fall for her.

Now, my complaint...
As much as I liked this book, I have the same complaint I had in book one. The writing is like watching a movie in fast forward. Characters come in, they say their bit, they exit quickly. There's no detail, no description and I had a hard time connecting with the scenes. I wish the author would take the time and describe the setting, the emotions and the characters in more descriptive detail.

The Wrap Up:
Awakening the Mobster was a great read. It did start out a bit slow but it was necessary to build up to where it needed to be. Once all that was out of the way, it was -Action.Packed-! Wow! I was really impressed with the author's ability to pull me in and keep me reading through the afternoon. This book, like book one, left off with a cliffy and I can't wait to read book three, Mobster's Vendetta. I'm so excited!! ;)

Well Written!

This is an excellent guide for teaching students the basic structure of the language. The acquisition is perfect for students in college. Specifically, the presentation is geared toward developing writing skills to critique high quality literature in the English Composition and Literature courses, as well as writing across the curriculum.

Excellent book

I taught the upper-level developmental writing courses, and this is one of my favorite books. The instruction is lively, clear, and concise--yet jam packed with information. So many students struggle with writing introductions, conclusions, and thesis statements. Unlike most books that jam all three topics into one chapter, this book breaks it down into three separate chapters with very clear, interesting examples and exercises to help you develop the skills and the craft of writing.

I often advised my students to hold on to this book when they leave my class and move on to Comp 1 and 2; the lessons here will them through to the more advanced courses. When I tutored comp 1 students in the lab, I'd introduce them to this book and told them, "If you don't understand a concept in your current book, turn to the appropriate topic in this book and work on those exercises.

The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because I didn't like the grammar section all that much.

You Don't Have To Believe Every Thought You Think

The book is 156 pages, but Bruce Van Horne gives away the good stuff in the introduction: You Don't Have To Believe Every Thought You Think. He goes on to describe a four step process for controlling your thoughts and pushing worry aside. From some pretty niftyJedi mind tricks for changing the conversation in your head to activities that use your physical body to change your mental state, this book is a primer on mind control... your own mind! If worry is consuming your life and stealing your joy, you can change the story and you already have everything you need.

This book will change your life!

I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Bruce is an awesome writer. This book is practical, easy to read, and simple to understand. I had an instant sense of calm and peace after reading it; especially Step 4 (Rest in P's). I love how down to earth the author is . I have read many self-development books over the years, and many of them seem just too "out there." This book is not like that. Bruce talks about his own personal struggles and gives multiple examples of challenges he had to overcome. I can relate to many of the things he writes about. He believes that by changing your thoughts, you can have everything you say you want in your life and much more. Imagine having that kind of power over your life! He teaches you in a concise and simple manner how to do this. I finally found a book that helped me to see how my thoughts actually create my reality. Thank you Bruce for such a wonderful gift.

Who Me, worry?

As one who has suffered from the self-destructive habit of worry in the past, I found this book well written and actually helpful. Unlike other books I have read on the topic which tend to be nothing more than simple platitudes and catchy lingo, the author gets to the heart of the issues with timeless advice in his easy to follow 4-step approach. I’m sure you will be inspired and encouraged by the wisdom and personal insights of Mr. Van Horn as you find yourself breaking free of the bondage of worry and stress.

$165 for something that looks like it was printed on an old office Xerox copier?

Another example of how college students are fair game to get ripped-off by suppliers of the college "industry" such as book publishers.

This is a "print on demand" book. It looks like it was copied on a 1980's office Xerox machine. Grainy black and white pictures and fuzzy type. How they can ask $135+ for something that probably cost $10 to make is beyond me.

As another reviewer remarked: "shame on Prentice-Hall!"

I returned the book after I received it. I got the 1976 edition for about $12. It has 99% of the info that this "updated" edition has. And despite the claims that this is "new and updated", it has only a few minor differences with the earlier versions. Other than updated statistics charts, and just a few notes on GM crops, it is identical in content to earlier editions.

To college instructors who require this for their classes: please consider how your students are getting ripped-off by you recommending this book!

Poor Print Quality. No meaningful update since 1976. $160!!! Shame on you, Prentice Hall.

A couple of years ago while trying to educate myself about agriculture I bought a used copy of the 1976 3rd edition for about $10. I recently began a consulting project where I needed more recent information and thus decided to buy the 'revised' 2006 edition of this book for the princely sum of $160. First, the book comes as a print-on-demand book with horrible (and I mean horrible) printing quality. The photos are barely legible and the regular text is grainy and clearly substandard. This for a $160 book? More importantly, the book has barely been updated since its 1976 edition. There are almost no new references, many of the ancient 1976 graphics are reproduced without change, there is no mention of climate change and barely any mention of GMOs. Pearson-Prentice Hall should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. I pity the poor students who have no choice but to buy this shoddy product. My copy is going back, and my bank account will be $160 richer. Students: buy a copy of the 1976 book and save yourselves major $$.

Disappointed in this book. The pictures are outdated, the information as well. This is a decent book for the most basic of classes but as far as keeping up with the newer technologies, it doesn't come close.

Highlighting Every Page

As a voracious reader, I have a strong tendency to highlight passages in books, taking special note of new insights, important facts, and particularly well written passages which seem to contain all of the above. My difficulty in reading Laurence Gardner's new book, The Origin of God, is that virtually every page ended up with highlights, often two or three to a page. Yellow highlighting and post-it flags everywhere... even an occasional underline.
In point of fact, Laurence Gardner provides a treasure trove of recent discoveries, lesser known facts, critical detail, unbiased analysis, and genuinely thoughtful understanding on the nature of the Biblical God. His latest book is an extraordinary, well-researched and well-organized treatise on a quest to find evidence that supports (or denies) the "long-standing and widespread notion of God's existence." The Origin of God subsequently considers a wide variety of sources, their credibility, how they agree or conflict with each other, and how the sum total of the resulting knowledge can lead each of us to a better understanding of God.
Despite the controversial nature of the subject, the author is able to provide an unbiased, persuasive picture of the various ways that ancient peoples perceived their deity (or deities). In the process, The Origin of God provides the reader with the raw material to reach their own conclusions. Both scholarly and academically correct, the book is also highly accessible to the lay reader. The fact Mr. Gardner also writes well, clearly, and in a manner easy to understand, is just icing on the cake.

Review of the Origin of God by Laurence Gardner

Laurence Gardner's eighth book in well over twenty years of thorough
and well referenced research on the many aspects of secular and
religious history, challenges what we have been taught about history,
science, religion and God. As with his first book Bloodline of the
Holy Grail, this book is bound to be a best seller, and will create
waves within the rigid established doctrines of those who seek to
dominate and control free men and women. This masterpiece completed
before his death from a long illness in August 2010, brings together
from his and other considerable archives of research and information,
the most important story of our incredible ancestors, their advanced
civilisation, and the identity of the flesh and blood individual and
his family, who led the re-start of civilisation and agriculture. Only
after they had disappeared from the Middle Eastern scene were they
worshipped in the religious sense; and they were then so enveloped in
supernatural trappings that their intrinsic advanced and benevolent
characteristics were swamped in a morass of pseudo-religious adulation

Very informative

I've read everyone of Gardner's books and this is so well organized and so easy read that you could almost use it as a reference book. You learn everything you need to know about the Annanage, Sumerian, Akkadian, belief systems and how they compare to the Judeo-Christian beliefs of today. If you read "Genesis of the Grail Kings", this book's material expands the first chapter or two of that book.
